Do the cartoon protests affect travel?
As long as the protests were limited to places like Pakistan and Iran, I wasn't too worried about them affecting my travel. However, there are now demonstrations all over the place, including places like India and Thailand. Even countries in Europe have reprinted the cartoons, and protests may start in the EU (if they haven't already). As an American citizen (and someone who looks like a Westerner), I'm starting to wonder. Cursory looks through a few of the State Department Travel Advisories don't mention anything.
However, if I were Danish, I'd seriously be reevaluating my travel plans. Should I be concerned? |
Not really. And I'm typing this as a Scandinavian in Jakarta, quite literally just around the corner from the Danish Embassy, which was pelted with eggs by 300 demonstrators last Friday. I remain fairly confident that the great, great majority of the world's people are still quite capable of distinguishing between the actions of some individuals and a country, and the difference between a peaceful protest and violent mayhem.

A house polished by eggs for free. That really would have been appreciated on other occassions.
