Cheapest Countries to Vacation...
 

I just returned from Buenos Aires and couldn't get over how cheap the city was for a major metropolitan city. Any other places that the Dollar (assuming the pound/euro would be too) goes real far?

Buenos aires reminded me of prague of 10 years ago.

I've always found Malaysia to be a great value for money destination. The quality of hotel you can get in Kuala Lumpur especially for the price is tough to match anywhere else in the world. Domestic flights within Malaysia are also quite cheap too, especially for Business Class compared to other parts of the world (and for LCC's, AirAsia usually has cheapo tix as well). As a country it's reasonably well developed too, so getting around isn't too painful. Finally, the food is fantastic, always a plus in my books! ^

Your dollar goes incredibly far in Turkey, or at least it did back in 2001. Hungary and Slovakia let you get twice what your dollar gets you in the US. Some great bargains can be had in Brazil, though it helps to get off the tourist trail to find them. Egypt was also amazing, with your buck buying five or six times what it would in the states. I also found Greece to be the cheapest of the Euro-zone countries, though it's not the bargain Argentina is.

My vote goes to Vietnam. The $$ goes along way, especially if you stay out of "Western" hotels. I love Hanoi, especially the shopping opportunities.

Pretty much all of Asia excluding Japan, Taiwan and S. Korea? Just about all of S. America as well.

There are plenty of countries around the world that have weaker economies where the cost of living is much less compared to much of the "industralized" world. You really have to factor in travel costs into the equation to find the true value.

For example, from the West Coast of the United States, Mexico can be an excellent value for the dollar. However, other countries that have similar economic power in Asia and Europe cost much more to travel and the combined cost would be higher than vacationing the same number of days in many "western countries".

But answering your question, I've found S.E. Asia (thailand, malaysia, Vietnam), Central/South America (costa rica, brazil, argintina, mexico) , and parts of Eastern Europe (old soviet block, turkey) to be excellent values for the dollar.
