PTS - yours or companies?
So... the boss told me to fly to asia..."book Econo, use your pts to upgrade"...
Previously, J class only was co. policy (though informal policies all around, so no T&C for me to check) for overseas flights... I'd be interested to hear feedback on such a request. I haven't said or done anything on this yet at work... To be frank, I am tempted to say 'sorry, i've no pts left from x,y,z' - mostly because while most, but not ALL my pts were earned on Company travel - aren't they mine? What if I had/have used them for, dunno, flowers, or something (I don't get a lot of holidays, so they know I haven't flown on them!) Anybody had similar situations? Etiquette advice needed perhaps?? |
I don't like the idea of lying, but flying J on an airline in which you have no points would seem like one way to make sure you are not in Y. I suppose you could be a little sneaky and fly J on an airline which is in an alliance with your base airline and then input your ff# much later after booking. Also, I would hope that your boss knows that (on most carriers), only full fare Y or something close to it is upgradeable.
Another potential excuse: "there was no inventory available in the upgraded class"... this is very often true on DL and several other carriers. |
If this is a legitimate request in tough times and you don't want to make a career-breaking issue out of it, this may be a thought: Some airlines have two economy fare tiers for upgrading: one for full/near-full fare, upgradeable for relatively few miles, and one for discount fares, upgradeable for a lot more miles. Suggest a compromise: they pay for a less expensively upgradeable fare, and you'll put in the miles to upgrade that one.

I think what your boss is telling you is that he will pay for econo. Anything above that is on your dime.
