US Flag on fuselage

I was always curious about this, and I wonder if anyone would know an answer to my question.
On planes registered in the US, small US flag is painted correctly (i.e. stars on the left hand side), while on the other side of the aircraft its painted in reverse image (stars on the right). Does anyone know why?

Pretend that the nose of the plane is a mast. From one side it will appear "flying" properly, from the other side it will be reversed.
