meaning...
In some Indian languages,
Suvarna = Gold Bhoomi = Land/Earth Therefore it would mean Land of Gold or Golden Land. I'd be very interested in the Thai meaning of-course... -R |
"Mouthful"? - It's all relative

Suvarna means something like "Of a good color" or perhaps "Of a golden color". Therefore, Suvarnabhumi may mean "land of a good color" or "land of a golden color". Sounds like a nice place! (I googled for the Sanskrit meanings... my Sanskrit is horribly rusty) |
I think the new airport code might be BKI for Bangkok International airport. I read that the BKK code will stay with Don Muang.

you are right. Suvarnabhumi means "land of gold". Gold, here doesn't mean real gold or gold color. But it implies more toward richness, prosperity, wealth, or fertility. The name Suvarnabhumi was given by King Bhumipol.
First, I also heard they will move BKK to the new airport. But recently, the new plan calls for those 'low cost carrier' to operate from Don Muang, thus they will need another code. The new airport is still a year away from opening (maybe later than that by Thai standard). |
I liked what the area was called before the airport, COBRA SWAMP. They built the airport on a swamp! That should make travel during the rainy season interesting. :)
