Lost passport , Do I need birth certificate ? to replace ?

I seem to have misplaced my passport , I have looked intensely for days . ( I live in 2 different apts ) I am traveling outside the country , later this week.
My birth certificate is in NY( stored among many files , that only I can probably find) , I am in LA. I have photocopy of it , and driver license , and SS# card .

Can I go to LA passport agency and get replacement , without birth certificate ?? and my lost one was set to expire in 3 years , when I do get new one is it good for 10 years , or just remaining 3 ?

I know I will need my outbound Tkt .

Do you have a copy of your lost passport? It's generally a good idea to have such a copy somewhere all the time where you have easy access, in order to facilitate renewel of a lost/stolen passport.

If you have a copy of the birth certificate with a raised seal from the entity that issued it, then you can use that and a DL to apply for a new passport good for 10 years.

My passport was stolen two years ago, in Geneva. I had to go to Bern with police report and new passport photos, and a new temporary one was issued immediately, good for six months. Once home, I had to send completed forms that I was given in Switzerland, and a new one was issued, good for ten years.

The fee I paid in Switzerland, as I recall, included the US reissue, was $75.

For ID, I had photo of stolen passport and CA DL - no birth certificate.

There is likely a difference between replacement (lost/stolen) and issuing new.

I replaced mine about 4 years ago by mail, and I did not need to send in a BC. I sent in the lost passport form and a copy of my lost passport photo page. I know a couple of people who lost passports overseas, went to the local USA Consolute/Embassy and it was replaced in a couple of hours without showing a BC.

I had a copy of my birth certificate, but without the raised seal and it was not accepted for a domestic replacement.

You'll probably have to call them and see what they can do since you're travelling soon.

Under normal circumstances, the procedure for replacing a lost passport is the same as applying for a new (not a renewal) passport -- id, official copy of birth certificate, photos, and money. You also have to submit the lost passport form along with it.

If you don't have an official copy of your birth certificate, you can order one by mail.
