Tipping amounts in the USA ?

Hi folks.

I understand that it can depend entirely on service received etc. but what are the general levels one should tip the following persons in the US : -

Bell boys in Hotels ?
Skycaps ?
Hotel Doormen ?
Concierge ?
Taxi's ?

Thanks

Hi Airframe,

I tend to give;
Bellboys ( who have helped with luggage $1 per bag)
Skycaps- do not use
Taxis- about 15%-20% and round up.

Not forgetting of course housekeeping ( $2 per day) and restaurant staff (15-20%- slightlymore for very good service)

Regards

TBS

Bellboys, Skycaps - $1 per bag
Taxis - 15-20% (assuming decent service)
Hotel Doormen - $1-2 for hailing a taxi
Concierge - $5-20, depending on (a) services performed (b) chances you'll be back...

Banking_Scot has it right about restaurant staff, too.

Bell boys = a $1 bag, $5 max
Skycaps = $1 or $2
Doormen = $0
Concierge = $5-10
Taxi's = 5-10% of the fare, rounded up to the nearest dollar
Waitstaff = 10-15%
Hotel maids = $0 - $1 per day

Bellboys = $1/bag (more if exceptionally heavy)

Hotel Doormen = usually nothing (for just opening door of cab or hotel), unless some substantial effort is made to hail a cab, etc.

Concierge = nothing for routine requests (standard restaurant recommendations/reservations), $10-20 for reservations at "hot" restaurants or other exceptional requests.

Taxis = 15-20%

Restaurant waitstaff = 20%

Housekeeping = around $2/day (rounding up at end or stay), but nothing if the room isn't as clean as I'd expect from the level of hotel I'm staying at (e.g. tipped nothing the time I found a half-eaten pretzel (not mine!) behind the drapes at a 4-star hotel).
