Do any airlines still use those cabin baggage tags? They alway seemed sort of exotic to me - especially when you got home and there was still a reminder of a trip to someplace far away attached to your briefcase.

All passengers in India require a cabin baggaage tag for each piece of carry on baggage. The security folks stamp the tag after screening and they are checked again before boarding a flight.

Yes, AF still does it. And I still do not understand why. Some AF check-in agents absolutely require that each piece of cabin baggage have the tag. If I were running AF, one of my first cost cutting measures would be to cut down (and almost eliminate) those cabin baggage tags.

With all the penny pinching on US carriers like no meals on transcon and paper boarding passes, it's amazing that AF still have those tags. Never having gotten one, it sounds quite interesting and quaint!

Some European carriers use them after they've weighed your carry-on to show that it's within their allowable limits.

UA has tags for carry-ons for international first. I usually take a couple, but I don't bother putting them on my bag and it's not as though they seem to serve any real purpose.

TS and EK offer them for approved cabin baggage purposes. In Pakistan, all airlines need to provide tags, (so they can be stamped after security) although I have also seen boarding passes being stamped instead.

IIRC many carriers still use them in order to stop people from taking aboard too much baggage

They should use them on MH to stop people taking aboard a dangerous amount of baggage, like on a flight from KUL to SYD where this couple used up the overhead baggage space, the speace under the seat infront of them and their remaining legroom (and lap!). Luckily I was in the aisle seat!

My girlfriend had a rather naff sticker thing on her handbag when she flew VS that showed it was Cabin baggage approved.

"approved cabin luggage" tags were slapped on our carry-ons by NWA in HKG recently to circumvent the super-strict carry on policy instituted by the airport authority.
I still don't understand why an airport cares if a carry on is slightly bigger than the metal shell they make you put it in before you get into the airside of the airport, especially at an airport where virtually every plane is a large, wide-body plane (with plenty of overhead storage space!!!)

In Europe they are hit-n-miss. I never can figgur out what causes them to be used or not used. It dont seem to matter what the load factor is.

I have seen this at several European airports. However, if I think there is any chance I will be required to check my carry on luggage, I either rent a locker or keep the heavy stuff in my car until after I have gotten my boarding pass. I have never been challenged at the gate if I got one of those tags approving my carry on luggage.

I know this irritates alot of you posters here but I am only carrying on one small suitcase. Not the mounds of stuff other people get away with carrying on the airplane. I can't help it if I like to read and usually carry about 5Kg of books with me. It is certainly not my fault that many times the wait at baggage claim is longer than the flight.
