Hotel express elevators
 

I just read this on boingboing.com this morning so I have not had an opportunity to test it. Many a morning has been spent in frustration as the hotel elevator taking me to breakfast stops at each floor to pick up every guest on his way to check-out.

HOWTO put an elevator in express mode without a key
This elevator hack sounds pretty cool, if slightly evil:
While some elevators require a key, others can be put into "Express" mode by pressing the "Door Close" and "Floor" buttons at the same time. This sweeps the car to the floor of your choice and avoids stops at any other floor.

I wouldn't do this routinely, but one does find oneself occasionally on the top floor of a heavily occupied high tower with a need to get to the bottom quickly. One might be tempted to try.

In recent years I have usually tried to choose a hotel floor not too far up, so that elevator rides would be shorter.

Many years ago I have seen elevator panels with a button marked "pass" whose purpose I thought (but did not try) was to bypass intervening floors.

The ability to sweep the elevator car non-stop to your floor is quite desirable for frequent use during off hours when you feel that an unsavory person might board.

My dad told me the same thing you wrote above, and every time we get into an elevator he says "express it". He believes that it works, but I just think that no one else needed to go down. But, we still do it, even with lots of people going down with us. Imagine the looks that we get when he says "express it" and squeezes into the corner to hit the 2 buttons...

I have seen elevators with express buttons (you might need an authorisation card or key) but this sounds interesting. Nothing to lose so I'll be trying this the next time I am in a hurry!
