How many countries in 1 day?
 

i rather suspect that many ft'ers will comfortably beat my recent experience and i'm curious to know what the target is!

i recently did UK-Amsterdam-Nice (flight), picked up a rental and drove via Monaco to San Remo (italy). Counting the principality as a bona fide "country", that makes 5 in a day.

easily beatable but the challenge is thrown!!

I took a train from Ghent, Belgium to Glasgow airport to get a flight to Norway. So I can match your 5 countries if you counnt England and Scotland as seperate....they have seperate soccer teams so they must be seperate countries right? ;)

If you're counting a 24-hour period as 'one day', I've managed Slovakia, Austria, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands on one trip (mostly by air), and the UK, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany all by road in 24 hours.

In the air - one "day" (more than 24 hours elapsed time) NZ, US, UK, Netherlands and Denmark - also Switzerland (x2), UK, Germany, Singapore and Indonesia. Incidentally these were both on the same trip.

Driving - Switzerland, Lichteinstein, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium in one day.

About 20 years ago a friend of mine got himself into the Guinness Book of Records by doing a phenomenal number of countries by train in 24 hours. He says that doing the research was harder than doing the actual trip.

By road, 5 in one day.

7 by air at least ... just counting airports though. I should be cursing award tickets. :D

I'm intrigued by the rail one, too.

The best I can find from a quick check on bahn.de is Arlon (BE) - Luxembourg (LU) - Metz (FR) - Munich (DE) - Salzburg (AT) - Ljubljana (SI) - Zagreb (HR) - Mitrovica (YU). I'm sure there's far better than that by taking odder routes, though.

6 in a 24-hour period : (Switzerland, Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Liechtenstein)

5 in a 24-hour period : (France, Italy, UK, Nigeria, Ghana) and (Germany, France, UK, Netherlands, Ghana) and (Macau SAR, PR China, Hong Kong SAR, Singapore, Malaysia)

I think the most countries one can visit in single day is 3. This is so because to really visit a country you must have a proper meal and interact with the locals. So in one day I had a breakfast meeting in Brussels, a lunch meeting in Paris, and a dinner meeting in Torino. That's it. Top that!

Keep flying West. You can get a few extra meals in a day that way. ;)

Not most countries, but most border crossings.

About 12 years ago when training for a marathon, I decided to run back and forth on the bridge over Niagara Falls, crossing the US/Canada border (and flashing the passport) over 20 times. By the 3rd/4th time they were annoyed, but by the 10th or so they were simply amused.

Would never try that these days though.

Ah yes, I used to do that a lot in Strasbourg - would cycle over to Germany, as many things were much cheaper there (was a student at the time, every pfennig counted).

The border guards were very friendly, unless you came back drunk and without your passport...

Hmm... some nutty flights to save money in Europe. Most in one day, UK-France-Switzerland-Czech Republic-Germany-Denmark-Finland. It was one hell of a looong day.

I have managed four countries during a day several times, but more than four, no way!!

Did South Korea, Phillipines and then Hong Kong and back to the U.S. I think the distance traveled should count as well :-).

LAX, HKG (2 hours in lounge), DEL (final destination), all in the air

During my LatinPass million-mile quest I flew to six countries in one day: Peru-Ecuador-Columbia-Costa Rica-El Salvador-Guatemala.

I've also done six driving: Germany-Austria-Italy-Liechtenstein-Switzerland-France (although the only reason I touched Italy was because I made a wrong turn and got lost.)

All in one go I did five by air. BAH to DXB to ZRH to BRU to DUB. Unfortunately being based in a secondary European city means you usually have to transit at least once sometimes twice.

I guess my record is 5:

Flew US to France (Paris) to that wacky EuroAirport of Basle/Mulhouse/Freiburg, where I proceeded to drive (briefly) through France and Germany into Switzerland to Lugano. And then, at the end of the day, just for grins, took a boat across the late to Campione, which is an exclave of Italy surrounded by Switzerland.

Hehe...I wish. I am simply the arms dealers pilot ;)

Set of from Equador early morning on a flight to New York, scheduled stop in Panama city, deplannned due to the problems in NY, asked to be rerouted to Europe, then went to Bogota, Colombia, then Madrid, Spain and finally to London, UK.

Have 9/11 stamps in my passport from all the above south american countries and got asked by US Immigration about my flying pattern for that day in 2002. :rolleyes:

I can't beat it, but I did once have a breakfast meeting in Mestre (Venice-sort of), a lunch meeting in Munich (okay, at the airport), and a dinner meeting in Birmingham which never took place because the other guy no-showed. The meetings were organized at short notice and it was one of the most expensive flights I ever took within Europe!

It's also feasible to drive from Belgium (Brussels) through Luxembourg, France, and Germany to Holland and back to Brussels, which would make five countries. I did it once years ago, including stopping for a beer in each country. A long day, but fun.
