Best Stand-Alone E-Mail Host (Personal Use)?

Since I no longer have an Internet or landline account in my name (my girlfriend does the honors), and her Internet host doesn't offer remote e-mail access, I'm looking for suggestions. On-the-road access is important. I'm willing to pay a few dollars a month. Suggestions?

But this would be better in Travel Technology

As a general rule any standard POP3 mailbox can be accessed remotely. If your provider doesn't offer webmail use a generic webmail client such as www.mailreader.com. Type in your mail server, user name and password and away you go! It's what I use on the rare occasions when I don't have my laptop.

I'd go with Gmail, too.

Can you downlowad your mail with gmail?? Or is it only a webmail host??

I find it very useful to download my email on my laptop and then read it while I'm on travel. You can do this with any POP server. Not sure about gmail (would be VERY cool though).

Just answered my question: yes you can!

Thanks for advice. Do folks continue to expect free g-mail once it's out of beta mode? Also, how is it better than the awful hotmail?

Much better than hotmail.

As far as the price, who knows? I really don't expect them to start charging for it.

Unless Microsoft buys them out

:D

Then it wouldn't work anymore. Blue Screen of death.

I'd expect some form of Gmail to be free when it exits Beta mode.

It's miles better than Hotmail, absolutely. You don't even notice the ads on Gmail. Again, a second ^ for Gmail.
