Do Medic Alert Bracelets/anklets set of Security??
 

Did a search and didn't come up with anything. I need to get a medical alert anklet for a severe allergy. I've looked around the net and some of them are stainless steel, some gold plated, some silver. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these things as they relate to setting off the security machines.

The one that my daughter wears has a clasp on it, so it should be easy to remove before going through Security. She doesn't travel, so I don't know if it would set off the alarms or not.

My son has worn a Medic Alert bracelet for 3 years and it has never been noticed at security. His is steel w/ enamel detailing on the front.

I have no experience, so I'll just theorize here...non-magnetic stainless steel (300 series, typically used in medical applications) is also a poor electrical conductor. It would produce only a weak response from a metal detector, so that you could probably get away with a small quantity of it, depending on the sensitivity setting of the detector. If you plate it with gold or silver, you will increase the electrical conductivity, which would make it more likely to alarm.

I've worn a bracelet for decades and it has never set off an alarm or been noticed by security personnel.

What type is it? Stainless, silver, or gold?

I wear a stainless MedicAlert necklace and have never had a problem with it going through security. If you get a secondary and are wanded the amulet part usually gives off a weak "beep" but the chain doesn't even register. It certainly doesn't need to be taken off to go through the metal detector.

Same here. For years I've worn a stainless steel Medic Alert wrist bracelet with a largish medallion (about 1 1/2" X 1"). It's never set off the metal detector, and I would never think of taking it off, because owing to the odd clasp design it takes my wife and me, both, to get it back on. Never been a problem though.

I am glad you're thinking of wearing something from Medic Alert for your allergy -- it is an underused and potentially lifesaving resource.
