Globe Trekker
Anyone here fascinated by this show on PBS… I’ve to say, that I’m a pretty big fan of this show, and try to catch it when it airs locally. The places they visit has me thinking of going on a vacation… I don’t think this shows compares with any travel shows on TV…
Anyone besides me a fan? Has anyone done a trip based on Globe Trekker? |
I've seen a few. I think the last ones that I saw were China and Turkey. Kinda weird program...they just go to various remote places. As far as travel program goes, I like Rick Steves better but then Rick Steves doesn't venture beyond Europe.

I really like this show.
I must admit I'm more a fan of when the girl, I think her name is Justine Shapiro hosts the show, versus the guy, but all in all it's a great travel show. One of my favourites has been when she went to Ecador. Riding on top of the train must have been amazing. And IMHO, Rick Steves doesn't even compare! GlobeTrekker is more of a backpacker's type show, focusing on destinations that backpackers would want to visit, very off the beaten track, whilst Rick is more into going to typical places, like France, and finding what he calls "Back Doors." Not that that is bad, just something different, and to compare is sorta apples to oranges... -A |

My 9-year-old son and I regularly watch Globe Trekker; he now wants to visit Tahiti and stay in an overwater bungalow after last week's installment.
|
Does anyone know if they are currently out filming new episodes? Whenever I watch this show I always thought that I was catching reruns and that the show was a couple years old. I think its the picture quality. I never know if the prices they quote are accurate or up to date.

I always seem to catch this show when the episode is about a place that I'm preparing to visit. I saw the Galapagos/Ecuador one right before I went there, and watched the Mongolia episode a few months ago (I leave for Mongolia next week). The Globe Trekker travelers are a lot more backpacker-y than I am, but we go to similar places and it's cool to get just a feeling for the region before I show up there. Frankly, the Mongolia episode scared the pants off me with its depiction of horrendous accommodations in UB and endless bumpy rides over dirt track, but I still want to go! I think my slightly-more-upmarket approach will help me.

Well I find Megan kind a Cute… Justine Is alright, but I like Ian, he’s pretty wired in a funny way. Heh… :o
The last episode I saw was the Tahiti ep… The promos say it’s a new season…. |
Megan McCormic is a hottie! Justine Shapiro needs to be taken off the air though, she's so frikkin annoying!
Throughout the whole Australia episde she keeps saying things like "Wow! That's 3 American Dollars!!" "So lets see, that's 45 US Cents!" The locals looked at her like the ugly american. Her travelling style is way too conservative for that show. On the other end of the spectrum though, Ian Clark is great. I also love this show. It's one of the few shows I Tivo. |
You did explain the discovery of extra "0" in the rate next morning, right? ;)

I've created a little travel monster... |
I love the shows that Justine Shapiro is on. She just has some kind of magical appeal to me. Though I have seen her trashed on other message boards. I have a theory though-- people with alot of appeal (like Justine) are either hated or loved. The bland hosts who have few critics lack the charisma to get people to watch-- but also have less harsh critics like Justine.
Though she has moved on to making films and is rarely on the show anymore. |
OMG! I love Globe Trekker. I've been watching it since they changed from LP back in 2002.
I like Justine and Megan. Although, that little Ian dude is funny. |
I started watching it back in the LP days. Was it originally on the Travel Channel? I don't catch many shows but I love all I've seen. Ian is my favorite. He is more inclined to eat anything and for some reason always wants to go for a swim. He cracks me up when he says, "tastes like chicken ... green slimy chicken."

yes
I love Globe Trekker! Although I would not want to travel back packing there have been programmes on places we are going to which give you ideas for trips to do when there( and then be able to return to the hotel afterwards!) |
