To many inconsistencies. Probably thought of the idea and somehow thinks everyone is going to shout hurrahs.

Even when it was cheap to go Europe and the weight limits were not as strick as they are now the ton of stuff I bought was not carried around but somehow managed to find its way to my front door.

Seems like getting a centurion card turns the holder into a pack mule

With three teenagers in Malta, you can bet that I have done this. I did it as recently as last week on BA2226. All the bags have wheels. Last week, the weights were probably around 75-77 pounds per bag.

I can squeeze a penny until it screams. That is how I got Centurion level and that is how I will keep it. Why should I pay 18% VAT on a product that costs 1/2 in the US?

Next time you are in Atlanta you will see that the ticketing counters no longer take your bags. They only weigh them and tag them. Then you have to go to the other side of the North Terminal, queue up again, and drop them off at the screening booth (desinated as N-9 on the wall). This is not a scam and I knew I would be flamed when I posted it. See any hurrahs on this thread?

With all the rules and other PC stuff today, it is like a narcotic to break one every now and then.

BTW, Delta is my airline of last resort. I only have the Gold card because of my Centurion membership. I used to fly Delta 99% of the time but I have found BA to be about 1000 times better on Transatlantic flights. When I do fly Delta once every blue moon, the gold card is worthless.

Yes, I am cruel and inhumane. The airlines never are...

 You spend the money on the Centurion card and go through all that hassle with your baggage to save a few bucks? I carry Amex Plat and I'm not nearly cheap enough to do what you do. You can save even more money if you get your food out of trash bins.

I just checked airline websites for salary for ramp agents. Salary is around $9-$10 an hour.

If they are making $40/hour, they have been working many, many, many years and have earned that.

What does it matter what they get paid? It is a human being.

FYI....There is no way to toss a 90 pound bag.

Well a quick perusal of your posts have convinced me.

btw - not sure how you equate an employee as an airline but continue to enjoy your flights (I mean complaints as that is what prevails in your recent posts.)

As it is highly doubtful you will ever post a word about anything that would remotely maximize my fllight experience or maximize my earning ability -----poos ignore feature turned on. bye bye.

great idea. so i thought i thought of everything but this takes it. made me laugh ^

arent ticket prices high enough without someone catching on and lowering the allowence even more because flights are getting mysteriously heavier? keep in mind that many airlines do monitor this board and if the right person reads about this. i can guarantee they will do something. this is considered lost revenue. honesty is the best policy IMHO.

Don't forget CHEAP!!!

Why not just pay up. I'm a student and can't be arsed to go through the hassle of sneaking off to load more into my case!

I'd also be slightly miffed if my plane ran out of fuel because the excess baggage made the pilots calculations bunk!

Gizmos May 24, 2005 2:00 pm

I believe that the passenger and carry one should both be weighed at the gate and if over xxx lb then they get charged an excess. I know this will entice critiscim from some larger members but it is not meant to offend

murphy May 24, 2005 7:55 pm

Do you put a "heavy" tag on it? Nothing less pleasant than picking up something that weighs 30lbs more than you expected. But who cares, right? You're saving a couple bucks.

chad75 May 24, 2005 8:20 pm

^ I wear a fat suit and stuff all my extra luggage inside of it.

kaptan May 24, 2005 8:46 pm

I wish you would just stay in Malta and if you do happen to travel that one of those 90 pound bags ends up giving you a hernia or causes some other serious injury for you.

sadiqhassan May 24, 2005 8:49 pm

Im not encouraging this type of behavior, but if you ever have an extra piece of baggage (eg 3 and you are allowed 2) just take the 3rd piece (provided its not too big) with you till the gate. Either they will let you take it on with you, or they will make you gate check it because its too big or because you have too many carry ons... normally they do this with apologies (because you cant take it on board with you). .. so you are breaking the rules but they apologize... makes me feel incredibly guilty :(

Also... constructive criticism is better than destructive criticism... try and be civil to eachother at least... some people professionally responsed to the OP whereas other just argued with them, and insulted them, he is a fellow FT'er and sooner or later he probably will have something valuable to say to all of us, so lets just be nice to eachother :)

Yeah, right.

90 pounds is an extremely heavy bag.

How about just checking another bag and paying for the excess baggage???!!!!

(Preface: I always travel with only carry on - no matter how far or how long - I pack light and buy stuff at my destination if I need it. I think 90lbs is a helluva lot more than I'd ever take anywhere. That said...)

So when the airlines charge a passenger $100 extra to allow them check that same 90 lbs bag, it has a lesser impact on the baggage handler how? Does that extra $100 go to the handlers? Kind of like a tip/bonus? Doubtful.

The airlines allow oversize and overweight luggage all the time and the same people have to handle it either way. The only difference is that the airlines make more money off of the fees for transporting it if they can. If chronic back injuries are a problem in the industry for baggage handlers, then it is up to their unions to fight for different procedures and equipment or up to OHSA to enfore different rules. If you think that the weight limits in place are for the sake of the baggage handlers, you're kidding yourself.

peace,
~Ben~

I carry a lightweight duffel in my suitcase on longer trips. If my bag is overweight, I pull out the duffel, load it up, and check it. On the other end, I load it back in my main bag and off I go.

If you have a carry-on, and two 50# bags (3 for top elite) for one person, how much more can you carry?

With a large suitcase, it's not too hard to cross the max weight threshold.
