I always bring a pair of white sneaker type socks to wear on the plane. They are very thick so I don't think any leakage can seep through from the bathroom floor. At least there's usually only 30 people and not hundreds using the bathrooms.
My feet swell like balloons on planes. I find athletic socks keep the filth off my feet and provide comfort for my swollen feet. I throw them out when I get home. |

It's hard not to comment on the leakage not seeping through but I'm holding my breath :D |
I made the mistake of reading halfway through this thread and now I feel like I'm about to throw up. . :(

On a recent return trip from Hawaii, a girl in the seat behind me put her bare feet on the back of my armrest. Now, she was cute, but I considered it fairly rude on her part. My seat, my armrest, thank you very much.
Dude! She was coming on to you! I would have tickled her feet and then she would have invited me to join the Mile High Club! ^ |

I wear shoes before landing and before takeoff for safety reasons (no socks, soft mocassins), and when I go to the restroom. Otherwise I have bare feet. I don't think it's a problem for anyone else. I do try not to put them in front of someone's face but otherwise I don't worry about their affect on others.
If you ask me, it's feet that are entombed in shoes that are disgusting. |

For long flights I either wear very comfortable shoes, or bring 'snuggle socks' to change into. I think going barefoot is gross, but sometimes you need to get out of your shoes.
Slipper-style socks seem the best compromise. I still slip my shoes on before heading to the bathroom though. Usually the bathrooms seem clean, but I'm not one to risk it. I hope they will say 'no walking around barefoot' - it's gross, and what would happen if as you walked past someone they knocked their coffee over? Hardly safe... |
Here's my take:
I think it's important that we be courteous to others and that we don't inconvenience others, BUT that we do what makes US comfortable too... so in this barefoot situation, I wouldn't go barefoot if I'm wearing shoes that clamp air in it, because then air would release and it would stink, but I'd maybe remove the shoe and put a blanket around my feet until I have to walk to the bathroom or whatever. If I'm using flip-flops, it'd be safe to remove them... but I DEFINITELY wouldn't walk barefoot (or even with socks) to the bathroom--alot of germs! I'm usually very independent and I don't really care what others think, to an extent, but in this case--it's common sense. =) Just my two pennies. |

Under the same logic I'd also advocate that everyone wear gloves and liquid-proof trousers at all times in case someone knocks over their coffee just when you walk by or while sitting next to that someone. Please let that be the problem of the persons who don't wear full body armor. HTB. |
