Things to do in Hamburg
We will be in Hamburg for two days and although we have been there before, this time would like to see more of the city/port/lake. Suggestions?

Do a harbour cruise "Hafenrundfahrt" that will take you through the "Speicherstadt", the old part of the harbour with the old warehouses which have been beutifully restored.
There are also some good museums "Hamburger Kunsthalle" "Museum fuer Kunst und Gewerbe" Stroll along the Alster lake and shop in the fancy arcades near Jungfernstieg and Gaensemarkt. Enjoy a seafood meal in Finkenwerder (a subburb at the river Elbe) and look at the cottages of retired sea captains. As an FT'er a must should be a visit to the Airbus plant. IIRC the plant is open to the public at least on weekdays. You might be lucky and see the odd Airbus Beluga take off transporting wings or other large Airbus parts to France. In the evening enjoy a musical or concert in one of the many theatres or is so inclinde visit the Reperbahn....the famous red-light district near the harbour. Plenty to do in that wonderful city. Enjoy! |
If your there over the weekend, Sunday morning from 5am-10am the St. Pauli Fischmarkt has been going on since 1703 (I believe). It was a blast just to walk around and watch the fish auctioneers (more like comedians) selling combo's of fish wrapped in paper. People go from the bars to the market and continue to party. There was a great band playing the morning I was there. Hope you get to make it there. Picked up some funny gifts there too.
Have fun! |

Good advise! I like to add: -Blankenese, go by S-Bahn or boat. Nice old village, winding streets. -Gallerias ... Hamburger Hof, others. Nice shops, restaurants. |
The "Schanzenviertel" (near Reeperbahn) has lots of independent llittle design shops. Perfect to get some nice cloths (Subway: "Feldstraße")
My favourite Hamburg Restaurant the the "Nil" (also in "Schanzenviertel") http://www.restaurant-nil.de/ (german only, sorry) A small restaurant, located in an old shoe shop. Food is great and so is the service. From Hamburg Harbour there is a Speedboat running to Helgoland which is a nice day trip, if you got some spare time left. |
This is all great - thanks for all the suggestions. As I mentioned, we have been there before but only briefly and then to call on ship builders, so we will have more time this go round.
