Longboat Keys, Florida
 

We have a 2bdr/2ba timeshare unit on hold at Little Gull Cottages, Longboat Keys, Florida, for 8/6/06. We've never been to Florida. Is this too close to the Hurricaine season? Is it any hotter/rainier/more humid than, say, Hawaii?
Any advice would help us make our decision.

Hurricane season normally will not be a problem in August. Is it hotter & more humid than Hawaii? Yes and yes . Pray for wind in early August.

Yes it will be humid and close to hurricane season, but you'll be in paradise!!!!!!!! And there is always a good breeze off the gulf on longboat key.

The hurricane season starts on June 1 and ends on Nov 30. What that means is that the conditions are most favorable during that time. Last year the hurricane that was heading for Siesta Key/Longboat Key but ended up devastating Tampa area came through on August 13.

That said, I would not worry about it too much. I live on Siesta Key year around and we deal with the possibility but have not been directly hit since I've moved here in '95. Came close couple of times but lucked out. The hurricane path is not that wide, so the chances of it hitting the spot that a tourist may be visiting for a week or two are very slim.

Can't tell you anything about the resort on our neighbor island.

And YES it will be hot and sticky in August. The water will be nice and warm, almost hottub temp. :D

Enjoy you stay and make sure you visit Siesta Key too!!!

I'll make sure we go to Siesta Island. Just the name sounds wonderful.

I just returned from Longboat Key on Monday, what an absolutely beautiful spot! We did make it over to the beach on Siesta Key and it was incredible also. Make sure you check out the Spanish restaurant called Colmbia in St. Armands Circle in Lido Key, which is the next island up from Longboat Key. Very good food.

The best time for South Florida is November to April!

I live some 30 miles South in Naples and I agree 100%.
However, I would like to mention, that July to September is not the best time for Florida. The temperature is mostly in the ties, we never had 100F. BTW, I will be in Canada during most of this time .. or in Europe, when the Euro is lower again.. :cool:

Don't worry about hurricanes. You have plenty of time to see if one is heading this way, and plenty of time to get out of the way if necessary. Sarasota has not taken a direct hit by a major hurricane since they started mapping them in the late 1800's.

It will be in the low 90's and very humid in August. It won't be bad on the beach with the breeze from the Gulf. It will probably rain a little bit almost every day. Don't worry, it doesn't last long unless it's a hurricane. ;)

Make sure you learn to do the "Stingray Shuffle". :cool:

Do make sure you get to Siesta Key. While there, have some drinks on the Daiquiri Deck and have dinner at the Siesta Key Oyster Bar. :D

Also take the time to walk around St. Armand's Circle on Lido Key.
