US Air Viability / Code Share

Looking to book CLE-HNL for July on US AIR, and the ticket is code share on United.

They beat the United price by ~$100.

Question – if US Air goes belly up – will United still honor the ticket?

This topic has been discussed on the US board. The moderator may want to consider moving this thread there. Anyway, the general consensus is that US should be safe at least until June 30, 2005. Realizing that you are traveling in July, you may be a bit anxious. However, the US board seems to be very upbeat about US's survival and rightly so, I think. I was one of those that thought US would be gone in the next month or two, but with all those recent positive news, it does look like it may survive longer than just a few more months. Ok, let's back to topic. Most FTers (whether they are US supporter or not) seem to agree that if you have UA-coded, US metal flight, it's safer than a straight US-coded, US metal if US goes down before your flight (that a big if with the ways things are looking). UA will most likely reaccomodate you on another flight if the US metal flight is not available. It will most likely be treated as if it's a UA flight that got cancelled. Hope this helps.

In my humble opinion, and those of many other FTers, US Air has been taking steps in the right direction and overcome many challenges. While there are still obstacles, the company has proven itself in the new year and seems very likely to be flying when you plan on taking the trip. I wouldn't worry that much. Plus, if you register (see my MilesBuzz thread or USAir forum) you'll get up to 40k bonus miles for flying in Envoy class to Europe or FREE DOUBLE MILES otherwise on all flights booked by Jan 30 2005 and flown by Dec 31 2005.

The leg to HNL (at least) is on United metal. I think UAL has pretty much confirmed that they will honor a US-codeshare ticket on a UAL-operated flight even if US ceases to exist in the meantime (which is a much more distant possibility that it once appeared).

I must have missed that - can you provide a source/link/reference? I saw one post saying a United CSR stated this, but I don't consider that "pretty much confirmed". Is there other info?

I think that was the reference I saw.

Given that it was an answer provided to someone in writing I was giving it more weight than just some verbal statement.

Sorry to get people excited... ;)
