I've seen my house just a couple of times. I live on the south side of town, and most all the flights land from the north. Oh-well......

I spotted my home once when I flew CX: YVR-HKG as the aircraft flew above the West Vancouver area after making a U turn towards the west. The backyard slope and landscape of my home made the recognition possible

as I'm a couple miles north of ORD, yes but thankfully from afar as the flight paths are not over my house.

When I lived in Elmhurst, I could see my apartment building when landing at ORD from the Southwest (the approach that takes you over the I-88/I-355 interchange). Once in a while, I can see my parents' house on that approach, but usually we go a little further north and a little higher.

I am on one of the approaches to DCA or IAD, I forget which. Anyway, what I propose is that all Flyertalkers place a colored lighting gel of a certain color, say purple (lighting gels are colored pieces of thin clear plastic, they are available at theatrical lighting supply houses), on an exterior light so that all our homes will be clearly visible from the air!

Wow, PremEx, what a cool link.

Pictures were taken of both my house and my office on the same day, probably in the afternoon. I could even see my deck furniture at my house, and my car was in the parking lot at work. :) Neato!

My son and his friend got some fabulous pictures of our house from a helicopter when his friend was learning to be a helicopter pilot.

When we land from the north, depending on where the plane turns, we will fly over our marina, our home and our office. It is easy to pick out all three. Marinas are always easy, and we have a pretty large yard with huge trees for a house right in a middle of the city, so it is pretty easy to spot as well. Our office has a very distinct shape and is pretty close to the airport so if I am flying a little EMB I can even pick out cars in the parking lot.

When I lived in West Bethesda, MD, used to see my house all the time taking off up river from DCA or on the river approach. Now that I am in Santa Monica, CA, I can see my house on take-offs from the north runway - especially a great view of it if flying to points north as planes turn north over the Santa Monica mountains. Coming inbound to LAX from the north, I fly directly over my house (approach path is over Santa Monica airport before turning back over downtown) - but only once have I seen my house since it is directly below.

The biggest fun/challenge for me is trying to spot my childhood home in Sykesville, MD. If you are on a path from ORD/DET/CLE and flying into BWI, or flying over BWI to circle DC for a northern approach to DCA, or turning for a southern approach to IAD (landing from the north), the you fly right over it (or it is off to the left in the case of IAD). But the area has more farmland and is less populated -- so it can be hard to get oriented - pick out cities like Frederick and Columbia - and then trace the the highways to find it. Of the 100 times I have flown overhead, I think I have picked it out less than 10.

Almost everyone who lives in Washington DC's Northwest quadrant can see their house when landing southbound into DCA on the left side. The planes usually swoop over the Potomac river and is a few miles from landing at a low altitude as it passes by Georgetown, Foggy Bottom/Watergate, and the National Mall. It's quite a breathtaking sight! I have seen my house quite clearly on numerous occasions. I haven't really paid attention to the right side but I imagine you can see quite a bit of Northern VA as well. So close you could almost touch it! :)

Yet another ORD flyer here... when landing on 27 L/R, I always spot my place -- since I live 1 mile due west of Wrigley Field, once I find the ballpark, it's pretty easy to find!

I've seen my home a couple times while in flight, I live a few miles from EFD (Ellington Field) where continental runs CO express flights out of. The last couple of times i've flown in on it they usually circle right over my neighborhood.

About 1 approach in 3 to LHR that I'm on (possibly more) ends up holding at Lambourn, then heading in right over the centre of London, giving amazing views of the city. This has to be one of my favourite approaches anyway.

But on this approach, if I'm on the left, I can pick out my building perfectly. And my office building, for that matter ;)

Those in London may like to have a look at http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ for aerial photos of the city by OS square...

I can see my house from 10-12k feet on northeast ATL approach. This is how (almost) all European flights arrive into ATL, so I get to see it quite often :)

I used to live about 100 yards off the flight path to the west of SBA, so when I was home I heard every plane rattle my windows, and when I was flying I could pick out my apartment and my work.

The most interesting thing I've spotted from the air was on a turboprop from SBA into LAX after dark, which involved circling around the city of LA to land into the ocean breeze. We went near the Coliseum and could see one end was very well lit up and read the markings in the end zone - it said "Carnivores." Jack In the Box was filming one of their commercials about the fictional football team, which I think they don't show anymore.
