I've considered where the sun is (relative to the plane) for years when selecting my window seat, trying to sit opposite it for non-glarey views. Just as important is not sitting over the wing. Now that I live on the west coast, scenery usually trumps where the sun is. Gotta sit on the east side of the aircraft when flying up and down the coast for views of the Sierra and Cascades.

Not always, at least for UA. The wing may begin a few rows ahead of where they say, for example on a United 744 in Biz Class. Also remember that an engine ahead of the wing can block a view, such that there are no ideal seats in the forward part of Y in some 737 models. The MD80 and - gasp - CRJ are excellent planes from the standpoint of view blockage.
