WTF is XT tax code??
 

Checking my BHX-PRG-SKG tix- it's gone up by a massive amount recently...is it meant to be an all-encompassing code for lots of different tax codes where there is no space to display everything??

I believe that it's a "catch all" tax bucket that can also include fuel surcharges (which probably accounts for the recent massive increase).

you are correct. XT is used as a combination code when there is insufficient room to print out the individual taxes. if you want to know what is being added in order to generate your XT total, you would have to review your pnr on the originating GDS. i am not sure if your travel agent can access that section [they should, but some things are barred by the airlines]; if your travel agent cannot view what is being added to generate your XT total, you will have to contact the airline.

you can find out all you want about airline taxes and tax codes by downloading the file:
SamplTaxlist[1].zip -- but that file is a compressed file of a 151-page pdf document!

Probably not - because these are not necessarily fixed amounts. For example, the passenger service charge (UB) in the UK is set by the airport and varies considerably between airports.

Unfortunately the information on this web site is somewhat limited/incomplete.

Just looked up UB and it shows you the amount charged at LHR but not at any other UK airports. As I said before the amounts vary considerably from airport to airport (my local airport, NWI, charges a whopping GBP 19.60!). Also, some airports charge on departure and some charge on arrival; so on some one-way or open-jaw itineraries you could be paying zero UB because your departure airport charges on arrival and your arrival airport charges on departure.

Since you don't say, I'm assuming you are flying OK. The above is what is called the fare ladder or fare calculation. If you have a ticket receipt for a flight, it is on there. The XT tax breakdown is bold - breakdown is 8.18CZ and 40.30YQ. There are also 8.66GB and 19.22UB taxes, which will be separated in the total fare at the bottom of the ticket.

Since I am in the US, this shows everything converted to US$ so your amounts may show differently, but the format should be about the same.

Used to be all the taxes (when there were only a couple) were all broken down individually. However, sometimes there are upwards of 20 different taxes that can apply, so they use the XT code to total them. Note that fuel surcharges are usually a 'Q' charge, and they usually appear in with the city pair/fare info, not in the tax breakdown as they are not a tax.
