Good computer/carry-on bag?
 

Does anyone know of a good rolling, combo computer/carry-on bag? I've had it with lugging two cases on and off of planes.

I have been using a Samsonite portable office roll-aboard for a number of years. Given the frequency that models are updated, I'm not certain if they still sell a similar style case. For what it's worth, it fits perfectly in most European overhead lockers.

But, it has two outer pockets, one designed to protect a laptop, the other set up to handle papers and general materials such as pens, note pads, cards, and other laptop related kit. The interior is sufficient enough for a two nighter or a short week.

For longer trips, I have a Tumi expandable roll-aboard that pushes the limits for bringing into the cabin that I only use on longer business trips or when heading out for a holiday. I check this bag most of the time unless I absolutely need to be out of the airport quickly or have a tight transfer.

I have a Eagle Creek laptop cover which is compact and keeps my laptop protected, but needs to be kept in another bag. It's less convenient to take the laptop out in transit this way, but I only need one bag.

A couple months ago I picked up a new set of Briggs & Riley bags including this computer bag and I couldn't be happier with it. This isn't rolling, but I believe they have rolling varieties of all of these. Personally, I prefer to have it non-rolling (extra room inside) and use its "faux pocket" to slide it down on top of the handle of this roll-aboard, which is nice because then I have a bag I can carry to the office, without the hassle of having to carry or roll two pieces.

What's also nice is the clipping strap system on the rolling carry-on for strapping another bag to it, which is great if you've got another bag that you checked (I usually check a garmet bag), so you can roll it all together as one item. No more luggage carts for me!

I've been very impressed with the Briggs & Riley stuff. It's very well thought out, obviously a lot of design work has been put into it, comes with a great warranty, and is tough. I know others prefer to buy "disposable" bags, but I've been very happy with my decision.

Not all of them have rollons but they have some neat options such as backpacks and neoprene sleeves if you just want to use a prexisiting rollon.

I have a Briggs & Riley computer bag (the version that is slightly bigger than the one shown) and a rollaway bag that I can put the computer bag on top using the 'faux pocket'. Matching set, and B&R stuff is very durable. It does get a bit heavy, though to handle.

One thing I really like about tbe B&R rolling bag is that there are handles on both the top *and* the bottom, which makes it very easy to lift it in and out of overhead bins. For me, durrability and good engineering are more important than lightweight. Plus it looks sharp :)
