australia seasons help please

Hello from the usa. I know that the seasons are opposite in australia.

am i correct that your winter (june and july) is not as busy as your summer (january) in terms of tourist loads?

I am going to sydney and canberra and would like to avoid the crowds and enjoy myself. when is the best time to visit sydney?

thanks for any help

alexa

Yup Dec through Feb is peak summer season. If you want to avoid crowds, busy roads etc you might also like to avoid major public and school holidays (although there may be more happening at those times).

Canberra can be cold in winter. Sydney never gets really cold but can be dreary wet at times in winter. November or March are good times but it really depends on what you are wanting to do.

I'd recommend September - have had some great times in Sydney then. More miserable Julys than good ones, though - and Canberra can be very cold then.

what about march?

thanks for the info. any opinion about march? the weather isnt that bad, and its a mid-season? The whole point is that i would like to enjoy myself and avoid the crowds

thanks, alexis

Personally, I'd say late March, or even just into April - but the weather can be glorious then as well. That is, of course, coming from someone who tries to avoid stinking hot weather as he doesn't like it much.

March can still be quite warm in SYD. My favourite time of year is April/May. But somehow this year we got an early winter & it was cool in May. A bit like it is now...it's supposedto be spring & it was supposed to be 25C here in SYD today but I'm freezing & it's raining (which we need badly).

I was eventually going to start my own thread on when is best time to visit Down Under, but I guess I'll just piggyback on this one. I like the sun and warmth, so I definitely won't visit in the winter (North America's summer). When I visit, I intend to go to Sydney and then to the Gold Coast for the beaches and some scuba diving. I've heard warnings about deadly (box?) jellyfish. When should I go, and is it worth scheduling my trip to avoid jellyfish season?

Sounds almost churlish to say it, but woo hoo! That is so badly needed.
