Is Malmo worth a side trip
I will be in Coppenhagen and I was considering doing a day trip to Malmo. Anything to see there?
|
Definitely worth it for one day. It's a nice place to walk around. There is the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Park, which was neat to see. The University is also pretty. The shopping is good. There are some excellent restaraunts, but their names are escaping me right now. One of them is in a basement and serves a reindeer specialty which is delicious (sorry Rudolph). It has a very Scandinavian feel, unlike Copenhagen.

Anyway, Copenhagen has a lot to see but if you are staying there for more than a weekend then a day trip to Sweden could be worth it. Maybe you could try out the new restaurant-boat going between the cities? I haven't been on a boat to Copenhagen since they built the bridge, but from what I hear they are good. |
I will be there between 2 and 3 days. The 3rd day mainly depends on whether or not I am going to Malmo :D

I actually found quite interesting going to Malmo for a side trip while I was in Copenhaguen. It is quite different from Copenhaguen so I really think you should go for it. It's actually not very big so a few hours is enough to see the main attractions.

It is worth the trip if only to ride across the amazing bridge! The train is cheaper, BTW.
Also, visiting Sweden, even if it is Skåne, gives one an appreciation of the differences between Denmark and Sweden (though Copenhagen is certainly different in a way from the rest of Denmark). Some shopping is cheaper in Sweden than Denmark, except for the sins-alcohol and tobacco-of course. On that point, check out a Systembolaget for the hell of it to see how Sweden dispenses booze. ;) Lund is nearby, and the cathedral there is worth a visit. |

Egads! It's a good thing they have no late night departures from Nyhavn! The divers were plenty busy fishing out bodies back when Flyvebådene and Pilen were in business! |
But the topic is sliding away here, I'll be happy to give you pointers on what to do here Yevlesh2. There are certanly things to see in Malmö and I can recommend you good restaurants in both Malmoe and Copenhagen. Welcome! |
I found Malmo somewhat boring in contrast to Copenhagen, but perhaps I didn't give it enough of a chance (only a Sunday afternoon). I did enjoy a canal cruise that you get somewhere near the train station and enjoyed seeing Oresund bridge.

If you are at all interested in contemporary art, be sure to see the Louisiana Museum outside of Copenhagen -- I think this would be more interesting than Malmo.
At one time the local authorities had some kind of circle multi-mode public transit ticket that allowed you to take a circular trip from Copenhagen to Malmo then up the coast and across to Elsinore and back down to Copenhagen. If that ticket still exists, it might be an interesting excusion for a day or two. Lund may have a university, but I didn't see much else there...sorry, folks, that's just my feeling! It was kind of funny to see Lego (a Danish product) selling for less in Malmo than in Copenhagen, but I doubt that justifies a trip. |
I think that transit option that RichardInSF is referring to is a 24-hour ticket, which basically allows you to go anywhere within a wide area.

I second the recommendation for Louisiana, it really is a fantastic museum.
Also good, although more dependent on the exhibition, and equally out of the way, is the Årken museum, to the South of Copenhagen. |
Yup, they do although it is not correct. They have applied to become an university but that will take a long time. I might be partial, as a Lund resident, but Malmö college is nothing compared to University of Lund. |
When I was in Denmark, I went to the Louisiana, Helsingor Castle, and Fredericksborg Castle all in one day. I concur that the Louisiana museum is great, and I was very impressed with the Castles. All the sites were easy to reach by train.
I also spent a couple hours in Malmo, which was quite different from Copehnagen and nice in its own right, but I would not say that it is a must-see. I think that if you must choose between the Louisiana+Castles loop or visiting Malmo, I'd definitely encourage you to go to the Louisiana and the Castles. Alex |
