The Chicken-or-Fish Question: Window or Aisle?
Hello all fellow flyertalkers, as part of a research paper I'm looking at how/why/what airline passengers request for specific seats on the plane, especially a window or aisle seat, in different classes, on different planes, and whether there is a correleation between their preferences and personal lifestyles/age etc etc. If you would so kindly help me in answering the following questions I'll so greatly appreciate it!!
(You may also like to specific which class you travel in or which airline your answer pertains to specifically :) ): 1. Window or Aisle? 2. Any specific seat preferences? 3. Would you get the check-in agent to change the seat for you if you are given a seat you are not comfortable with? 4. Would you insist on a change of seat even after you are told "we are very full today"? 5. Would you request for a window-or-aisle seat if you are given a bulkhead, emergency exit, or upgraded? 6. Seat preference (window-or-aisle) is due to (you may select more than one:) (a) window for gazing out (b) window for leaning against (c) window for privacy (d) aisle for ease in leaving/returning seat (e) aisle for easy access to overhead (f) aisle for easy communication with FAs (g) others: (please specify) 7. Does flying long-haul or short-haul affect your choice of seats? (If yes, why?) 8. Does flying in different classes affect your choice of seats? Why? 9. Window always, for the view and to avoid falling objects from the overhead bin.
I prefer the last row in a small First Class cabin (e.g., 737-200), close to the back in a large First Class cabin (e.g., 757), and behind the wing in coach (e.g., around row 40 of a 757). I hate bulkheads. I would prefer a coach window seat to a First Class bulkhead aisle seat. |
1. Window or Aisle? Aisle
2. Any specific seat preferences? Exit Rows 3. Would you get the check-in agent to change the seat for you if you are given a seat you are not comfortable with? I'd certainly ask, though I usually pick something in advance 4. Would you insist on a change of seat even after you are told "we are very full today"? I'd ask, probably not insist 5. Would you request for a window-or-aisle seat if you are given a bulkhead, emergency exit, or upgraded? Asiles in coach, don't care in business, and if the choice was emergency window or regular seat, then emergency window 6. Seat preference (window-or-aisle) is due to (you may select more than one (a) window for gazing out (b) window for leaning against (c) window for privacy (d) aisle for ease in leaving/returning seat (e) aisle for easy access to overhead (f) aisle for easy communication with FAs (g) others: (please specify) Asile to stretch my feet out and for the elbow room when the cart isn't there 7. Does flying long-haul or short-haul affect your choice of seats? (If yes, why?) Longer flights, the more comfortable seats I want (exit rows, upgrades, etc) 8. Does flying in different classes affect your choice of seats? Why? 9. Are you likely to request for a change of seats on-board if you feel that the passengers around you disrupts your flight? (esp. if you are placed in bulkhead bassinet) I wouldn't fit in a bassinet, but if there were seats I would just move 9. Do you fly more than once every two months? Yes 10. Do you fly mainly for work or pleasure? Mostly pleasure 11. Sex: M/F Age: m 46 12. Do you often fly alone or with company? company 13. Are you on any status with any frequent flyer programs? Yes 14. (You may also like to specific which class you travel in or which airline your answer pertains to specifically :) ):
I almost always fly in first/business and my flights are on Delta. 1. Window or Aisle? Window except for when in non-exit or non-bulkhead coach 2. Any specific seat preferences? Usually bulkhead in any class unless crew rest seats are available, exit row in coach 3. Would you get the check-in agent to change the seat for you if you are given a seat you are not comfortable with? I choose my seats online but will request a change at the gate if I didn't get the seats I wanted online. 4. Would you insist on a change of seat even after you are told "we are very full today"? Depends on how bad my seat is. 5. Would you request for a window-or-aisle seat if you are given a bulkhead, emergency exit, or upgraded? Window 6. Seat preference (window-or-aisle) is due to (you may select more than one:) (b) window for leaning against 7. Does flying long-haul or short-haul affect your choice of seats? (If yes, why?) Nope. I want to be comfy even if it's a 30 min flight. 8. Does flying in different classes affect your choice of seats? Why? See notes above about seat choices. Aisle in coach when not in preferred rows because it can get out easily. 9. Are you likely to request for a change of seats on-board if you feel that the passengers around you disrupts your flight? (esp. if you are placed in bulkhead bassinet) Yes, if I can change to a decent seat. 9. Do you fly more than once every two months? Every week. 10. Do you fly mainly for work or pleasure? Work. 11. Sex: F Age: 24 12. Do you often fly alone or with company? Alone 13. Are you on any status with any frequent flyer programs? Platinum Delta 14. Any favourite airlines or planes? |
I regularly fly longhauls in Business or First
1. Window or Aisle? I book an aisle seat and if noone sits next to me I move to the window seat 2. Any specific seat preferences? Depends on aircraft: 747 upper deck exit row, no upper deck then first row bulkhead seat 3. Would you get the check-in agent to change the seat for you if you are given a seat you are not comfortable with? Oh yes 4. Would you insist on a change of seat even after you are told "we are very full today"? I would ask but if the plane is full there is nothing I can do. I book a seat at the same time I book the flights and 99% of the time I have gotten the seat I requested. 5. Would you request for a window-or-aisle seat if you are given a bulkhead, emergency exit, or upgraded? When I get op-ups from Biz to First I take whatever seat they give and don't ask for anything special. 6. Seat preference (window-or-aisle) is due to (you may select more than one (a) window for gazing out (d) aisle for ease in leaving/returning seat without disturbing the other pax 7. Does flying long-haul or short-haul affect your choice of seats? (If yes, why?) not really no more the type of aircraft used 8. Does flying in different classes affect your choice of seats? Why? again depends more on aircraft type ie. upper deck or not 9. Are you likely to request for a change of seats on-board if you feel that the passengers around you disrupts your flight? (esp. if you are placed in bulkhead bassinet) Nope never done that. Once I sit down I stay there unless FA asks me to move...never happened though 9. Do you fly more than once every two months? about that 10. Do you fly mainly for work or pleasure? combination of both 11. Sex: M/F Age: M 29 12. Do you often fly alone or with company? alone 13. Are you on any status with any frequent flyer programs? Air Canada Gold 14. Any favourite airlines or planes? 747 and concorde |
1. Window or Aisle? Window (depending on a/c type)
2. Any specific seat preferences? Usually towards the rear of the plane if the seat chart shows the plane is filling up when making reservations 3. Would you get the check-in agent to change the seat for you if you are given a seat you are not comfortable with? Yes, but I tend to pick my seat when reserving the flight 4. Would you insist on a change of seat even after you are told "we are very full today"? I'll have my seat already booked 5. Would you request for a window-or-aisle seat if you are given a bulkhead, emergency exit, or upgraded? Prefer window. 6. Seat preference (window-or-aisle) is due to (you may select more than one (a) window for gazing out (b) window for leaning against 7. Does flying long-haul or short-haul affect your choice of seats? (If yes, why?) No 8. Does flying in different classes affect your choice of seats? Why? No 9. Are you on any status with any frequent flyer programs? AA Gold 14. Any favourite airlines or planes? Favorite airline: AS; airline I have to fly, AA (because AS doesn't go to DFW) |

A range of airlines and classes. 1. Window or Aisle? Always a window. So surprised many FT'ers seem to prefer aisle seats. I love the view. 2. Any specific seat preferences? None really except not over the centre of the wing which restricts the view. 3. Would you get the check-in agent to change the seat for you if you are given a seat you are not comfortable with? Oh yes. Always trying for that view. 4. Would you insist on a change of seat even after you are told "we are very full today"? Well if they don't have one left they don't have one left (although platitudes like "we re very full today" don't cut it with me. Besides, planes are meant to be full). 5. Would you request for a window-or-aisle seat if you are given a bulkhead, emergency exit, or upgraded? Yes 6. Seat preference (window-or-aisle) is due to (you may select more than one (a) window for gazing out Yes (b) window for leaning against Yes, on longhaul Y class (c) window for privacy (d) aisle for ease in leaving/returning seat (e) aisle for easy access to overhead (f) aisle for easy communication with FAs (g) others: (please specify) 7. Does flying long-haul or short-haul affect your choice of seats? (If yes, why?) No 8. Does flying in different classes affect your choice of seats? Why? No. 9. Are you likely to request for a change of seats on-board if you feel that the passengers around you disrupts your flight? (esp. if you are placed in bulkhead bassinet) No 9. Do you fly more than once every two months? Certainly ! (just got back from the airport 2 hours ago, like most FT-ers on a Friday night) 10. Do you fly mainly for work or pleasure? Mostly work but quite a lot at my own expense too. 11. Sex: M/F Age: M Forty--er-something ;) 12. Do you often fly alone or with company? Mostly alone 13. Are you on any status with any frequent flyer programs? AA BA 14. Any favourite airlines or planes? All of them !! |

(You may also like to specific which class you travel in or which airline your answer pertains to specifically :) ): 1. Window or Aisle? Window. I always like to look out, particularly in turbulence. 2. Any specific seat preferences? In coach, an exit row (if there's a window there). Otherwise, as far forward as possible. In F, bulkhead on those airlines that have a cut-out for your feet, otherwise, row 2. 3. Would you get the check-in agent to change the seat for you if you are given a seat you are not comfortable with? Absolutely. I do it all the time. 4. Would you insist on a change of seat even after you are told "we are very full today"? Why not? The answer is non-responsive to the question. In any event, I generally fly on carriers with whom I have elite status, and I expect special treatment. 5. Would you request for a window-or-aisle seat if you are given a bulkhead, emergency exit, or upgraded? Sure. What has one to do with the other? 6. Seat preference (window-or-aisle) is due to (you may select more than one:) (a) window for gazing out That's why. (b) window for leaning against Not at all comfortable, and not a factor. (c) window for privacy Well, yes, as opposed to middle. (d) aisle for ease in leaving/returning seat Don't care. (e) aisle for easy access to overhead Don't care. (f) aisle for easy communication with FAs Don't care. (g) others: (please specify) See above. 7. Does flying long-haul or short-haul affect your choice of seats? (If yes, why?) Yes. I'm pickier about where I sit on a long haul. If it's a short enough flight, it doesn't much matter where I sit. 8. Does flying in different classes affect your choice of seats? Why? Yes. See above. 9. Are you likely to request for a change of seats on-board if you feel that the passengers around you disrupts your flight? (esp. if you are placed in bulkhead bassinet) ABSOLUTELY!!!!! I would do it for the stated reason, or if there were children in the same row. Children and babies are the only classes of passengers allowed to cause disruptions without risking expulsion from the aircraft and/or arrest. If a pax is drunk, obnoxious, abusive, etc., the FAs will handle it. If a baby is screaming, or a toddler kicking seats, etc., the FAs can and will do nothing. 9. Do you fly more than once every two months? Yes. 10. Do you fly mainly for work or pleasure? Mostly work, but a lot for pleasure. 11. Sex: M/F M Age: 50 12. Do you often fly alone or with company? For business, alone. For pleasure, with my wife. 13. Are you on any status with any frequent flyer programs? Platinum on CO, PremierExec on UA. 14. Any favourite airlines or planes? Cathay Pacific is my all-time favorite. I've had good experiences on Iberia and TAP. Domestically in the US, I like CO and UA though, frankly, all the majors are equally dismal. As for planes, I like MD80s because of their 3+2 seating (I like to be on the 2 side). I think 737s are pretty good. Thank you!! I will post the survey analysis once I get them all done up :). Thanks once again!!!! Regards MetCalve |
