Study on Hassle at Airports

Hello,

we are a team of academic researchers at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. We are conducting a study on the causes and consequences of hassle at airports. It looks like there is a wealth of experiences represented in this forum, and we hope that you can help us out. We would like to invite you to participate in a brief on-line study about hassle that you have experienced at airports. This on-line study will take about 10 minutes and is completely anonymous.

Your participation is greatly appreciated.

Note: We posted an earlier copy of this message a little while ago and want to thank everybody who participated so far. We would like to collect more data (to reach an adequate sample size) and would like to encourage more people from this forum to participate. Thank you.

[We apologize for any crosspostings you might experience -- we are trying to reach a number of different groups of travelers to assure that our study captures views of a broad range of travelers. We also have conferred with a number of FT administrators, including B747-437B, ScottC, Dan, and Randy Peterson. Thank you for your patience.]

Careful of phrasing/titles in academic research!

A study about "hassle" at airports?

Hey, this might be legit, but the first thing that went through my mind was my thesis advisor's skin catching fire and peeling away from his face. The second thing that went through my mind was the chair of the thesis committee sliding a 3 X 5 card across the table to me and saying, "Mr. Nechetsky, please provide us with appropriate citations in proffesional journals that adequately define "hassle."

I wasn't even asleep and I woke up in a cold sweat...

Thank you for your reply. Your intuition is correct, there is not much prior research on hassle (although there is a some). We take a particular and novel approach -- focusing on the emotional and cognitive dimensions of hassle experiences. We plan (i.e., sometime this summer) to study specific, well defined experiences of travelers at airports and explore how they affect those cognitions and emotions. Do not worry about skin peeling off -- things are not that out of the ordinary, and sometimes new strands of research are given a chance to emerge.

Cheers,

--Martin
