Thats exactly what happens, unless you are part of the visit for a day to tick it off the list group.

It does get increasingly harder, expensiver, and one finds themselves going back to the same places instead of see above.

I still travel as much in my 30s as I did in my 20s - but the rate of adding new countries has significantly slowed down.

Probably will only be adding one new one in 2017 (Chile, #150)

I just got my 50th with Ecuador this year.

Alas, I never got to do the gap-year multi-month overland trip in a place like Europe or Africa to run up the score. Instead it has been fly-in, stay a few days and fly out.

I did not get to Brazil in June 2013. My father's declining health meant I could not get away from the domicile for the span of time I would have deemed necessary to explore a new country. {He had regular rotational doctor appointments every # months for which I would have had to deliver & retrieve him to | from the medical center.}
Somehow though, one of my flights back from Japan in a subsequent year sent me through Beijing, for # hours (connecting from ANA to UAL), so China is now on this list. And, I've now been to Japan twelve times, with trip #13 soft-planned for April.
