What's the +4? Kosovo, Palestine, Vatican, and?

Still at 157 here, with the rest of the year looking like:

St Kitts (158)
Nauru, Fiji, Kiribati, Solomons, Timor, Samoa, Tuvalu, Tonga, PNG (167)
Turkmenistan (168)
Israel, Palestine (170)
Malawi, Comoros, Madagascar, Tanzania, Uganda, Eritrea, Yemen, KSA (178)

So going into 2015, hopefully will be down to 18 to go!

My guess on the 4th would be Taiwan, but that's just what my +4 would be.

Sounds like you have a great trip lined up. I'm working in Yemen so if you're spending some time in Sana'a let me know. I'm pretty much stuck within a compound but I brew my own beer and we play poker on Thursdays so you'd be welcome to join.

They are not sovereign states but they are constituent countries of the United Kingdom (which is a sovereign state). I know of no institution or organisation in the UK that does not recognise them as countries.*

The title of this thread is not "How many Sovereign States have you Visited" but "How many Countries..."

As a British Citizen, with a Welsh mother, an English father and resident in Scotland, I would be shocked (and rather angry) if any legal document came into my purview that described any of them as anything other than a country. Just out of curiosity, CMK10, what would you describe England (or Scotland, or Wales) as, if not a country?

-- Henry

* Well, in the case of Wales, there is the Church of England and the Lawn Tennis Association, who still (occasionally) use the term "All England" for "England and Wales."

** In the case of Northern Ireland, there is an on-going dispute over its status (Dublin has a formal but non-belligerent claim that it is - or should be - part of the Republic of Ireland).

I don't call them anything, they're part of the United Kingdom. I don't call Quebec or Puerto Rico a country either.

No list is ever going to 100% "correct" but these 2 lists below from WorldAtlas seem pretty darn close to me. It gives a total of 250 different countries and recognised territories/dependencies that are all possible for a tourist to visit.

(I can think of a few like Ross Dependency and British Antarctic Territory that should be added, and some like Palmyra Atoll, Coral Sea Islands, Kingman Reef, Navassa Island etc that should not be in there in a fit, but that's for another thread.)

These 2 lists do NOT include non-existent "countries" or "territories/dependencies" often commonly misidentified as such - like Scotland, Tasmania, Easter Island, Wales, Newfoundland, Alaska, Micronesia, Lapland, Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, etc, etc

http://www.worldatlas.com/dependtr.htm in conjunction WITH -

http://www.worldatlas.com/nations.htm

Be interesting to see postings here of where FlyerTalkers have been on their travels. Be nice if countries from these two lists were the only ones "claimed", for the sake of some overall consistency.

And opinions will also vary on this, but I personally do not think/regard a purely transit stop via an airport at Bahrain, Singapore, Frankfurt, Reyjkavik, etc counts as "visiting" that country.

According to this list, Taiwan is not a country. #Fail.
The list provided by the Club Internationale des Grands Voyageurs is, in my opinion, much more accurate.

Different people have different definitions. For instance, why not calling Puerto Rico a "country" (or Hawaii, for that matter) when the historical, social, and political status is different from the "owner" country (in this case, the USA)? Who, in their right mind, would consider Mayotte, French Polynesia, or Mayotte as "France" when the relation with the motherland is, well, minimal and the geographic and cultural distance is abysmal?

Like always, common sense is warranted. I do not honestly follow the official UN count of countries in my list, because otherwise places like Taiwan are not considered countries and even Israel could be disputed as such as it is not recognized by everyone. A list like the one published by the Club Internationale des Grands Voyageurs is IMHO much more pertinent.
