Where to Stay in Bankok

I was researching some hotels in BKK for a pleasure trip later this year. The hotels were nicely arranged by the sections of town (China Town, Siam Square, Riverside, Silon, Sokhumurt, Pratuham, and Ratchdapiseh. My question: Out of these choices, is there any one area that would be most recommended or best situated for a first-time visitor so I won't have to spend too much time in the heavy traffic in this city? (Please forgive me if I have mid-spelled any of the about sectors).

I like to stay in the Sukhumvit area. It's on the Skytrain and right off the expressway to and from the airport.

I would stay near the river.

Lots of Bangkok hotels discussed in the active Asia forum below and the various hotel forums in FT miles.

edited to add: you can do a search in a forum for your keywords by using the search function in the upper right hand corner of the page.
