LAX to Cancun / Alaska Air or Mexicana?

I thought I had sent this post, but it never appeared.

My wife and I are traveling Los Angeles to Cancun, Mex in March. Flying out on a Friday, back on a Thurs. Could use help and advise.

Alaska Air and Mexicana are the only non-stops. Alaska flys 737-800, Mex flies 757s. We're assigned to cattle class -- any difference in seats. I'm 6'2" but not large. Concerned about a 4+ hour trip.

Also, is there a difference between carriers? Better equip? Better food or ? Haven't flown Alaska in 5 yrs...never on Mex. Any seats to avoid (or aim for?)

Lastly, heard that Mex offers the ability to pay $150 for an upgrade at check in if seats are avail. Are they ever avail? Worth the investment?

Would appreciate all responses as this is first husband/wife vacation in years without kids!!!

Wishing all a successful travel experience.

Alaska flies 737-900's on that route, all under two years old. Alaska allows day of flight upgrades for $100 if between 1250-2500 miles. I have never flown Mexicana but I can highly recommend Alaska.
