Especially as summer approaches and the days and evenings are absolutely beautiful. I need to disagree with one of the comments above. While English is not widely spoken in everyday life, all of the major hotels, most of the toursity restaurants, shopping areas, museums etc -English will be fine. There are no Hyatts in BA, the park hyatt became a Four Seasons last year. As indicated above, the best bargains, other than food at restaurants, will be wine and leather goods. You can get a custom made leather or suede jacket for under 50 bucks. The best restaurant IMO is Cabana Las Lilas where you can have a 4 star 4 course steak dinner with app, salad, steak, vegetable, potatoes wine, coffee and dessert for about $20-$30 depending on the wine.</font> |
I agree that BA is a wonderful city to visit.
If you are into antiques the weekend flea market at San Telmo is a must or the artists selling various "objects de art"(inexpensive in $US terms) on Calle Caminito. We took the very inexpensive radio-taxis everywhere and never had a problem, what was surprising is that they are prepared to take short trips which taxis in other cities shy from. I know I am not going make any friends here but we found our only meal at Cabana Las Lilas very disappointing and on that basis concluded the place is overrated perhaps we caught them on a bad night (plus my wife saying over and over "best place in town huh?") We did enjoy two other restaurants in the Puerto Madero district. The seafood place Puerto Cristal and an Italian place whose name slips me ( few doors down from Asia de Cuba) mike |
I will be in BA for a few days before christmas, arriving on afternoon of 21/12 departing early am 26/12. Anyone else about?
Will be staying in the Hilton. |

The Hilton is in a great location for a weekend visit. I usually get a $100 corporate rate. I used to stay at the Park Hyatt which was in a different but very good location. The Hilton is by the port which has plenty of great restaurants and at least one big disco which is open on the weekends. The Hyatt is walking distance to lots of shopping and the Recoleto. The Recoleto is perhaps the most fabulous cemetary in the world. You don't usually see "fabulous" and "cemetary" in the same sentence, but you will understand if you visit.
As for language, I only speak kindergarden Spanish but I get along just fine in BA and elsewhere in Latin America. I've had to order plenty of meals in Spanish, but that's not too hard. The advice about the taxis is very important. I was with a female colleague in a BA taxi once and the driver was crazy. If she had been alone it could have gotten quite ugly. Make sure your hotel doorman checks out the driver before you get in. Other than that, you'll be fine as a woman alone in BA. |
GUWonder I will be in Punta before I go to BA,19&20 staying at the Conrad. Perhaps we can meet for a drink and a bite?

Joh and I will be in EZE December 23. (AND on January 6/7)
Gaucho100K is meeting us at airport, taking us to lunch and dropping us back at airport later that day for our 9.30pm flight to Sao Paulo and La Paz Bolivia. Anyone around to join us at lunch might care to post on this thread if you are about in case Alex does not start a new one! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/004039.html We were in EZE a couple of times last year - before and after devaluation. We are on our own dim, and got a GREAT rate a decent hotel in city. About $50 IIRC? Anyone have a heads up on something similar today. Best Sheraton price I can see is Liberator is $US109 + 21% and I do not like that place much. We have a 10.20 pm flight from EZE - IAD Jan 7th, so somewhere we can get a guaranteed late checkout is pretty important to us. ------------------ ~ Glen ~ sipping bubbly from a UA 747-400 exit row 15 near you SOON! |
