The Port Authority has set an opening date: Wednesday, December 17.

I hope that it actually happens, since I'm arriving at JFK on December 22.

Interesting. Newsday runs the story under the headline "Light-Rail Train To JFK To Open Dec. 17", yet the article turns out to be mostly about the train operator who was killed during testing. I've seen enough of this project to still not believe anything until I see it (though they have removed the tape covering the AirTrain signs at Terminal 7).

Information about the upcoming opening is present on the Port Authority Web site but surprisingly hard to find - seems they're more proud of their "Don't Block the Box" campaign at the Holland Tunnel. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...m/rolleyes.gif Even if you navigate to the JFK airport page and click on getting to and from the airport you won't find anything. Only if you click the AirTrain logo on the Port Authority home page will you find a link to their brochure, which raises a few questions...

It's nice that AirTrain takes MetroCard, but how many people who have unlimited weekly or monthly MetroCards are now going to have to buy separate cards just for AirTrain, which only takes the pay-per-ride version? I'm glad I'm not the person whose job it is to explain this to customers; I can only imagine the confusion this will cause.

That thing on the turnstile looks suspiciously like a smart card reader - does anyone know what it's for?

Finally, why the heck is the Jamaica stop labeled "Station D"? Was "Jamaica" not good enough? I mean, speak the customers' language - LIRR passengers all know what "change at Jamaica" means but no-one knows what to do when they need to "change at Station D."
