Ski Message Boards? Specifically Utah...
I'm going to Utah in December for a long weekend and wanted to see which resort to go to. Is there a place like FT where people talk about the different mountains?
Right now, I've booked a Marriott hotel in Park City but thinking of just staying slopeside at The Canyons. Looking for opinions. P.S. We all snowboard. Thanks. |

I don't know about FT forums but if I were you I would opt for Snowboard instead [the opposite direction as Park City from Salt Lake City.
If you're prepared to pay The Canyons lodging prices to stay "slopeside," why not the Cliff Hotel at the base of Snowboard? The snowriding is more challenging; the lift tickets at a discount from many Salt Lake City sources are considerably less expensive; and if you get lucky with a powder morning, the place to be is Alta which is next door. Good luck! [This message has been edited by smarten (edited 11-10-2003).] |
Alta is indeed the place to be ... except if you are a snowboarder (not allowed!)

Although this doesn't help the original poster, it might help a future searcher...
IMO, Deer Valley is the best resort in Utah, but strictly for skiers. It may not be the best in terms of bowls and other HMO fodder, but if you like long, sweeping, well-groomed runs, then it's the place to be. Also, Park City locals (I do 2-3 weeks there a year so I've talked to a few) claim that Park City Mountain Resort has the the best hard runs around, and I am inclined to believe them, although I am not a fan of these myself. They also allow boarders, much to my chagrin. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif |
I'm more of a level 2 or 3 snowboarder... i'm inclined to stay at the Park City Marriott and just drive or take shuttles to either Park City or the Canyons now. That way I won't be tied down.

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">A customer flying into the Salt Lake International Airport will receive one free lift ticket on the same day of travel at any of Park City's three resorts (Park City Mountain Resort, The Canyons Resort or Deer Valley Resort). Simply take your airline-boarding pass along with a completed redemption coupon and photo identification to one of the resort ticket window's where they will redeem the completed coupon and airline-boarding pass for a same day lift pass. Quick START Vacation redemption coupons can be downloaded at www.parkcityinfo.com. Only one lift pass per person, per boarding pass will be honored. Promotional offer is valid only on arrival day and must be accompanied by a boarding pass noting the date of arrival. Boarding pass and redemption coupon must be surrendered at the ticket window for ticket redemption. </font> link for form to bring w/ boarding pass: http://www.parkcityinfo.com/skiing/q...m.htm?src=7910 |
Frommer's message boards can't hold a candle to FT, but they do have a folder for ski discussions here:
http://www.frommers.com/cgi-bin/WebX?14@@.ee974bd I have skied Utah a lot and typically stay in suburban Sandy for less expensive lodging yet still good access to both Little Cottonwood (Snowbird, Alta) and Big Cottonwood Canyons (Solitude, Brighton). A book I really like is the Unofficial Guide to Skiing and Snowboarding the West. Still a first edition from about 1992, so don't buy it new. I just picked up a couple for my kids at a bargain book store for $1. Anyway, it gives a very good overview of all the major ski areas in the US Rockies, and what they have to offer for varying abilities etc. I always use it when planning trips and deciding between areas. Any specific questions about areas except the Canyons or Sundance, fire away and I'll try to answer. T2 Edited to fix link [This message has been edited by tartetatin2 (edited Nov 12, 2003).] |

bagold:
I am very familiar with the Park City area (it's even possible that I may work at a Park City-area hotel) http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif Please feel free to contact me via email on profile if you have any specific questions about the resorts in the area. (I am also a snowboarder.) I would love to discuss your vacation with you. |
personally, snowbird was so much better for boarding. theres powder bowls everywhere rather than just groomed runs. and over the back makes my eyes water thinking about it... it doesnt have the nightlife of park though. |
