coastline?

State with the longest coastline?

Hint: NOT ALASKA !!!

bhatnasx Oct 30, 2003 12:16 pm

I'm going to disagree with you & say that it is alaska. 6,640 miles of coastline is more than any other US state I can think of. Unless this is a trick question and you're not talking about US states. But I'm going with Alaska.

The state with the longest coastline in the US is Michigan.

Yup. Has the Detroit side, as well as the upper peninsula that hangs off of Wisconsin. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif

New Hampshire has lots of clotheslines.

Does Michigan really have any coastline at all? It's got the Great Lakes, not an ocean. You don't really hear the shore of a lake referred to as the "coast."

I have always heard that, counting freshwater, Minnesota has more coastline than any other state by a wide margin. (I 'spose I'm open to being convinced that Michigan has more - I usually hear this stat from my MSP-based in-laws.)

Counting only saltwater, I simply can't fathom it being anything other than Alaska. Even if islands starting throwing a wrench in things, it seems that Alaska should still be able to hold its own with the Aluetians, etc.

The LONGEST coastline or the MOST coastline?

The two are not necessarily the same. Hawaii does not have any long coastlines, but I wouldn't be surprised if the aggregate coastlines of all the islands there were more than Alaska's.

The correct answer is .... LOUiSIANA.

Supposedly has over 15,000 miles of coastline.

Now, I read that ... I didn't actually measure it !!! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif

Minnesota, with all it's lakes doesn't count because that is not the coast - If you cannot get in a boat and leave the state, then it is not part of the coast.
