But why would they need to look *twice* to see if you have a boarding pass? It would be pretty hard to check in, get a boarding pass, complete the first boarding pass inspection, and then un-check-in on your way to the second boarding pass inspection.

I did this unintentionally once, had a fully refundable ticket, checked-in, and then was called and told at the gate 'Don't come, Hurricane Isabel is coming'. So I walked to special services, had them cancel the reservation and I walked out.

Don't see why it wouldn't work!

stimpy, UA will give you a gate pass I believe. Call them or whatever airline. You're not the first to go through this situation, and buying a full Y seems a bit overkill just to meet the lady at the gate. I once had a recruiter on a potential job leave me a message that he wanted me to meet him for an interview in a particular airline's lounge (behind security) while he was briefly passing through my city of residence. He didn't think about the fact that I might have trouble getting to the interview a/ I didn't have status with that airline and b/ I wasn't flying that day!!

I bought a first class ticket, attended the interview (sharing a chuckle together when I mentioned the hoops I had gone through so we could meet), then cancelled the reservation and got a full refund. While I didn't get the job, the recruiter later told me that he used the story on subsequent occasions as an example of creative problem solving. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif
