Round trip with 2 diff. airlines

I will need to accompany my dad back to Jakarta from Los Angeles. He already has a ticket on JAL via NRT. On the way back, I will have to accompany my mom. She, however, would love to stop in Hong Kong to do some shopping. Is there a cheap way to purchase JAL and CX for this r/t journey LAX-NRT-CGK-HKG-LAX ? I tried to price it through itn.net and it's always over $2000 ! I found out that buying 2 r/t is cheaper for $1400 and not use 1/2 of the tickets on both carriers? (i.e. LAX-NRT-CKG-NRT-LAX, and CGK-HKG-LAX-HKG-CGK).

Or is there any other way for me to do this routing?
