THE places to see in your life?
Okay, I have been a lot of places...and seen things I thought I would never see. I could never even list (like many of you) all the amazing things I have witnessed.
My question is...what have you seen...just in case I haven't seen it? What are they BEST places you have been? I want to plan some very cool trips in the next year and have NO idea where to go. WOW! Rudi, intense stuff! Like we discussed the other day at lunch...with age comes knowledge and wisdom....and obviously amazing life experiences. I feel quite humbled now.

Rudi, Dorian,
Amazing list of experiences. Have you been to the Grand Canyon in Arizona? IMHO, its got to be one of the places that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime. bj-21. |
Many of the same personal and public experiences that Rudi notes, and:
* The eruption of Mt. St. Helens 1980. * The 1966 Rosebowl Parade/Gamewith UCLA date, (UCLA 14/Michigan 12). * Flying over endless Alaskan Glaciers on a crystal clear day in October, 1992, ANC/SEA, while the Captain, an obvious history buff, delivered a 1 hour+ explanation of the land below. * The view of the California desert during an unplanned jump from a military plane in 1963. * Catamaran sail (hitting 19 knots) from Lanaii to Maui 1997. * Watching Roy Rogers and Dale Evans waving from the back of a train in Illinois, 1949??? * The advance of a tornado, Silvis, Illinois, 1951 (I believe). * The Alhambra, Granada, Spain, 1998. * Dancing at the Rainbow Room, atop Rockefeller Center, 1999. * Watching Rudi walking through the streets of San Francisco wearing his authentic Swiss costume, 1999 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif [This message has been edited by Punki (edited 10-28-2000).] |
For my wife and me, it is a simple one-two punch in Australia. First, a week on Bedarra Island to recover from the jet lag on the trans-Pacific trip. Sixteen cottages, complete relaxation, silver service in shorts with excellent cuisine. Follow that up with a week in our Favorite spot in the world - Lizard Island - sand, isolated beaches, a small water skiff, wonderful snorkeling in the Blue Lagoon and nearby, and 'mudbugs' in our picnic hamper daily! Ozstamps - what do you think about these two??
On our last visit, we were also able to spend a week on Orpheus Island, a week on Hayman Island, and finish the 5-week vacation with a week in our favorite Australian city - Melbourne. We will do it again, soon. W've been there a number of times already - in a few years we will spend 6 months headquartered just south of Brisbane, in Main Beach for their summer. |
Sitting in the centre of the mighty Zambezi River, on New Years Day. In a tiny rock pocket, one FOOT from the edge of the huge Victoria Falls. From the Zimbabwe side (where 99.999% of the tourists visit) it appreared you were about to swept over the 300 feet high falls any second. THE single most exhilarating thing I have ever done as a tourist and visiting 100+ countries. MAGIC - do it if you ever visit the Falls!

Would the California desert per chance be just north of Palm Springs? Could we both have spent a season at the same lovely S. C. island resort - perhaps in the late sixties? Ooh, won't this be fun if true! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Semper Fi Pam |
svpii, my not-to-be-forgotten summer on the lovely S.C. island (sans Eiffel Tower) was in 1962. Lucky me. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

I was there 7 years later. Actually last year, I had a conference in Hilton Head and then a meeting in Charleston, do I drove up the coast and couldn't resist a visit to the island! You can't imagine how small it is! It seemed so HUGE then - we must have "walked" in a circle for those hours at a time! Who knew?

Wow! MrKey, the next time I'm in S. Florida, I'm giving you a call! What fun it would be to listen to the stories you must have!

And jewels!
My favorites: The Crown Jewels at the Tower of London, The jewels of the Topkapi, and The Hope Diamond and cast at the Smithsonian. Makes my fingers itch all the way up to my elbows. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif [This message has been edited by Punki (edited 10-28-2000).] |
It's simple. The place to see is Wengen. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
But seriously, the world is full of amazing scenery and spectacle. If you have an open mind you'll know that every country on the planet has something to show you. My motto is "Just Do It". But for americans I advise to explore the middle east. Americans are taught by our media to be afraid of that part of the world. I can tell you the media twists the truth and you are missing out on a lot if you don't go. [This message has been edited by stimpy (edited 10-28-2000).] |
