How to Get Bulkhead or Exit Row?

Does anyone have any suggestions of how a status-less CO flyer like me can get myself "upgraded" to a bulkhead or exit row seat in coach?

I think you just need to ask? Even when flying on business (ususally at the lowest economy prices), I make a point of calling and asking a day or two before. Sometimes the seats are already taken, sometimes not.

I have no status whatsoever.

Does not CO allow you to check-in over the internet 30 hours prior to departure?

If so and exit row/bulkhead seating is available you should be able to grab a confirmed seat.

Good luck.

FYI -- CO doesn't even let folks with status reserve the exit row seats without showing up and talking to a real-live agent.

My statusless friend was able to confirm an exit-row seat on CO by using CO Online Check-in 30 hours prior to departure. Might be a good way to look into this.

MANY THANKS to all who posted in response to my question. Persistence paid off. I kept calling CO every couple of days, until I got an agent who was able to confirm me for window exit row seats on BOTH legs of my trip, which I can now see on my on-line reservation at continental.com. As for the bulkhead, everyone at CO to whom I spoke said that bulkhead seats are ONLY assigned at the airport.

All airlines seem to have specific policies on exit rows.

On United Premier Exec (Gold) and 1K members (and no others lower in status AFAIK) may be allocated exits 330 days in advance. No questions asked. Computer will not let phone agent allocate these unless that status is entered and recognised.

Of course on day of travel if check-in staffer (or on board purser) determines exit row pax is either incapable or too infirm to handle that responsibility you may be re-seated.)

On a 747 on a 14/15 hour flight in coach that exit row makes Gold status weight its weight in ...... http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif

I was top level elite on CO for about 5 years in mid 90s and mostly flew coach to the USA, and in those days anyway, could always get exits pre-allocated.

To ozstamps. What is Delta's policy on exit seats on Transatlantic flights ?
