You can get Sheraton Gateway and Four Points for about $30-35 on Priceline. 'Technically' you can't check out same day, but they never care.

transpac, it certainly sounds do-able to me, but I have very limited experience/knowledge of LA traffic! I do know that the bus is about 40 minutes each way and they run pretty frequently (about every 10 - 15 minutes, I think - check the schedule on the web site, just to make sure).

One thing we missed here is the possibility of getting a day rate at one of the airport hotels and hanging out by the pool or something.

Fly to Las Vegas and back. WN 1888 departs LAX at 11:00 and arrives LAS 12:00 pm. Put a quarter or two in the airport slot machines. WN 304 departs LAS at 1:40 PM and arrives LAX 2:50 PM, or you could take the following flight (arriving LAX at 4:05 PM). Obviously dealing with your checked luggage would not be an issue with this scenario.
