Who "owns" the window shade?
There have been posts periodically about the rationalle behind requiring window shades to be up duing takeoff/landing. It appears that some people don't like this for some reason. I have a question from coming from the opposite direction.
I like looking outside during takeoff and landing, as I like to see what the area is like. There have been cases where window-seat passengers have left the shade down.
My question is: who has the right to control whether the shade is up or down? Since the window is for all of the passengers on that row, it doesn't seem to me that one of the passengers should have complete control of it. I've never made a big deal about it, as it's not a huge issue for me, but I'm interested in peoples' opinions on what's "right".

Napa fly BA First then you can commandeer a group of window shades and you ignore any grief from seats in the centre you got there first!

Seat 1B holder on the SQ Megatops has control of the shades on both sides of the plane!
Sometimes the FAs ask to close them for the movie or sleep...in every class of service...
I like to have them open to see the blue sky and the clouds below!

If you want to control the window shade, get a window seat. It's that simple. The person on the aisle gets the benefit of being on the aisle. The window seat gets the benefit of controlling the window shade. And I heartily recommend what the others have said. BA First 1A is where I sit.

Does that mean if I'm on the aisle I get to control the aisle, i.e. tell people in the row when they can get up?

I think the airline owns the window shade.
They do sometimes have a little logo on them that says, for instance "Boeing" but I don't think that means they own it. If they did, you would fly "Boeing Airlines" and I don't think there is such an airline.

I definitely agree ownership belongs to the airline. If you dispute that, try taking one off the window mid-flight and see what happens. Personally, I think window seat controls the window... I'd rather have the aisle anyway.

So you have an aisle seat, and the movies come on. Do you have a right to request shades be drawn, when the SUN GLARES into your field of vision from across the any aisle windows or in front or behind you on the same side? The glare being even greater, if you wear glasses!
A few contrarian passengers want to read with the shade up during the movie without regard to the other passengers.

(I prefer window seats, and it's my shade!)
