Honeymoon Hints

I'm going to Portugal and Spain on my honeymoon in two weeks and am looking for advice on what you liked/ didn't like about your honeymoon or what you would have done differently.

I'm not looking for specific travel tips.. more like suggestions about how to make the most of my trip.

Here's a little background on us: my soon-to-be-wife and I have traveled overseas together before and have each been to at least one place we are going on our trip. We are in our 30s. We are going to Madeira, Lisbon, Madrid, Caceres, and Salamanca for two weeks.

thanks.

I appreciate the link Karma, but that deals with flight upgrades and honeymoons. As I stated in my original post, I'm not looking for traveling info.. more about how to spend time on a honeymoon, personal reflections etc..

We spent most of our honeymoon (almost exactly 10 years ago!) on the coast of California. Let's see, if I could do it all over again ...
  • No "road trips". The best parts of our honeymoon were when we were plunked down in one place, enjoying life and each others' company. The more we moved around, the greater the potential for mix-ups. For instance ... My husband's crazy driving almost got us killed on the highway into Yosemite. Plus a highway we were supposed to take from Yosemite to Death Valley was still snowed in (in late May) preventing us from enjoying one part of our planned trip.
  • Stay in the fanciest places you can reasonably afford. You only honeymoon once, and you deserve it!
  • Make sure there are no problems with your camera before you go. On of ours had a light leak, destroying about half our photos. Luckily, we used two different cameras throughout our trips, so our photo memories were not completely destroyed.
  • Tell folks it's your honeymoon! We weren't trying to get upgrades on flights/in hotels/etc, but we often got complimentary champagne and such when folks found out we were just married!

I'll let you know if I think of anything else.

more like suggestions about how to make the most of my trip.

How about locking the door, shutting the curtains and testing if two viagra will really stop you rolling out of bed

Do you REALLY need help deciding what to do on your honeymoon? http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...um/biggrin.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif

Are you sure that you posted this on the right board, forum? http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...m/rolleyes.gif

Well, spike, you might have better luck in the Women Traveller's forum. I know you're not a woman yourself, but men are allowed to post there too, and I think some folks there might actually have some suggestions that would make your soon-to-be wife happy. Personally, I thought TravelBuzz would be a fine forum to ask the questions you asked, but whatever...

SRQ GUY.. no, I didn't grow up or go to school in Utah. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

USAFAN.. how about marriage advice then. I gather from your posts that you have been married awhile.

Plan nothing for the first day after you arrive.

When I got married, the wedding was Friday night, we left at dawn o'clock on Saturday for a flight to San Juan for a cruise. Sunday was a day at sea. We had the entire day to do nothing, and we really needed that day to unwind!

Yes I have ... Do what your wife asks you to do, and you will be fine.

Regarding your honeymoon, I would have a relaxed planning; everything organized, reserved, but no rush. Just imagine, you arrive in Madrid, Lisbon ... and search for a hotel ... oh, happy day.
In Portugal I would stay in one of the best POUSADAS. They are something special, however, the food is not very good.
Or in Cascais Hotel Albatroz or FAROL DESIGN HOTEL http://www.cascais.org/
Madrid, Barcelona must be exiting, and I guess they have better hotels than in Lisbon!?! In Madrid I would definitely go to the opera.
I know, you don't want to get such hints ...
But a nice place, nice hotel, nice restaurant is important....at least for Mrs. USAFAN and me.
I wish you all the best for your honeymoon and many years to come.
Please post a report after your trip; no details needed, only about trips, places, hotels, opera and such ...

Here's some advice. Don't forget the definition of LOVE...

"A form of temporary insanity cured by marriage."
