I second this!

And I'll third it! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif Renting a car to drive into FRA (or any big German city) for a short stay is a terrible idea. Take a cab if you don't want to take public transportation.

I've taken the train to Wiesbaden and back -- nice town to walk around or visit the Bath. But check timing, it strikes me as marginally too far for 4 1/2 hours.

That's a good idea. Wiesbaden is really a very, very nice. However, the train station is on the other end of the city, at least 3 to 4 miles away from the Kurhaus and Altstadt.

I agree with USAFAN on the museums--the Stadelsches Kunstinstitut has an outstanding 20th century collection and the walk along the river is lovely. Also, downtown Frankfurt has incredible public sculpture. The office buildings (mostly banks) are required to fulfill a public art function and have some really fabulous sculpture. I'm envious of your 5 hours--have a great time!

Don't knock it til you've tried it. And I have tried the S-Bahn late at night and I'll stick with my car thank you.

I guess it's up to your personality. I always prefer driving unless time doesn't permit it. But at FRA, it's so easy to grab your keys (if you elite at one of the big firms) and go. I can get from the airplane door to the city in 40-50 minutes depending on traffic and how far out the gate is. And as B Watson said, if you are flying LH F, they take pretty good care of you, late or not. The same goes for C in my experience.

Plus the train doesn't go everywhere. If you have a rendezvous at a particular restaurant, it's either a car or taxi. As long as you know your way around, you might as well drive yourself.

How did you determine he hasn't? http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...m/confused.gif

I think someone that knows their way around would likely not post a what should I do in Frankfurt thread. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif You can certainly get anywhere with the train/public transportation.

Driving from the airport to the city centre takes 20 to 30 mns (according to FRA's web site.) The train ride takes 10, and at peak hours trains depart every 10 mns (every 15 mns past 22:00.)

btw, a taxi costs approximately e20 (one-way). Given the traffic around FRA I would not even consider a car for a short layover unless you are arriving/departing outside of peak hours. [The airport web site advises asking for the flat rate of e25 at such times.]

Well he did say he visited FRA often on business. And that is exactly how I learned to drive there and most every other city in Europe. However I'm certainly not trying to force anyone into driving. I'm just saying that if driving is your bag, it's quite easy to do at FRA. Especially if you going from the airport to the old section of the city before or after rush hour.

Would I do it in London, Amsterdam or Paris? No, because it takes far longer and costs much more as parking is very difficult there. But in Frankfurt it's quite easy.

Don't wast that money. You get the same stuff much cheaper at any "outlet store" like Saks 5th, Etienne Aigner ....
The Euro was 0.9... dollar a couple of month ago, now the Euro is 1.06+++.

Hi! New to this board and thought this was a good time to post, since I just got back from Frankfurt two days ago! DEFINITELY go to the Städtische Galerie. They have a fabulous Rembrandt special exhibit, which runs until May 8. The collection of 48 Rembrandts from all over the world was one of the best exhibits I've seen -- beautifully lit and presented along with a video chronology. It alone is worth a trip.

BWatson-- you any good at Blackjack...? http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...um/biggrin.gif

Not really an option for so long, I would definetely take the advice and check out the Gallery, but... 30 minutes before you board... nothing like a little game of cards... http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...um/biggrin.gif
