Thailand Suggestions?
Greetings!
I am stopping over in Thailand on my way back from Vietnam. I'll have about 4 1/2 days and am looking for suggestions as to how I might split my time. Do I spend it all in Bangkok? If not, how many days is sufficient? Where else do people recommend going? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |
You should spend at least one or two days in Bangkok if you have never been there before. The Royal Palace is fantastic. The various Wats are excellent, including several on the river that you can cross for about 1 cent US. The canal ride is fabulous, including stopping at the Royal Boat museum. There are other palaces and museums to see. The nightlife is really something if you are into that.
If you like beaches, you can fly cheaply to Samui or similar places. Highland cities like Mae Hong Son, Chaing Rai or Chaing Mai are worth it. A 1.5 hour train ride north of the Bangkok airport is Ayuthaya, and it along with Sukhotai farther north are wonderul places to visit. They are miniature Anghkor Wat like areas but more spread out. |
4 days is not very much ! If you have never been in Thailand bevor, you could spent all your time in BKK ! Nice 4* hotel direct in center oposite of PATPONG is the MONTIEN ( around 45$/room/night ). Flying to an island is to expensive for 2 or 3 nights ! The flight to Koh Samui is around 160 $ and to Phuket around 120 $ ! But there is a small island " Koh Samet " around 3 h. by car from BKK or 1 1/2 h. from Pattaya. Transfer by A/C minibus should not be more than 20 $ each way ! And on the island you find small bungl. from 20$/night ! For the north of Thailand your time there is to short ! Bevore I forget, if you want to that island you should go just when you arr. in BKK ! So you don`t lose much time with a second transfer to the city !

Be sure to check out the Priceline Asia board. There are some great deals to be had in Thailand.

Four days wouldn't even make a dent in seeing and enjoying Bangkok. I wouldn't try any other trips until I learned what Thailand is like, then make plans for a return with other desired destinations, such as beaches or the Northern country.
And above all, get a Thai massage, even if you don't like massages for trip recovery. |
Thanks for the suggestions so far! I kind of figured I should just concentrate on Bangkok. I really just want to get a taste for Thailand as I am sure I will return.
Question though: how easy is it to get to the floating markets? Can this be done in just a day? |
I vote for Bangkok too! I'm here now and wish I didn't have to leave.
The place wher I'm staying is about$12US/night. I love it. There are all ranges to stay. If you like nice, check out the Peninsula Hotel. I've paid $120US. You willnot find nicer. |
