Hi,

I am looking for a good WEBSITE where I can view various maps of countries.

I am particularly interested in obtaining an online map of the ISLANDS IN HAWAII.

Any suggestions?

You were unclear as to whether you wanted a site that contained digitized images of paper maps or whether you instead wanted a site that would create maps on the fly from a dataset. You also did not indicate whether you wanted maps that showed current or near current conditions, or whether you were instead interested in historic maps. You also did not indicate what type of map you were intested in -- some maps focus on showing man-made features such as roads and railroad tracks, while others focus on showing political boundaries, and still others focus on showing the topography. I know of good sites on the Internet for any of these kinds of maps, but you would have to be more detailed in what you want before I could give you a meaningful response.

Do you happen to have a site that works like Mapquest but can pull up driving direction maps in Europe - namely Paris, Rome and London?

I actually want maps which show the various cities.

For example, I am keen on learning of the various islands of Hawaii, and the large cities within each island.

And also learning of what comprises of the 'Florida Keys'

Basically maps which can help me identify cities/towns which would be useful in planning a holiday/trip.

I think the best way to get travel maps is to join AAA; not only do you get emergency road service, but you can order free maps, tourbooks ($10-15 value each), and triptiks, for foreign countries as well as the US. The annual fee pays for itself. Also, you can buy fee-free travelers checks in several currencies at decent exchange rates.

just try the same thing but with the local domain name. For mapquest in England for example it's

(both of those are valid, I didn't just make them up)

There is also Mapblast (which I think is UK based)

But don't forget your locally owned Map Store. (Some of us make our living by selling maps and we can provide a better choice than what is available digitally)

For Europe, I use www.multimap.com -- for example, here is an image that I chose at random from Slovakia:

Multimap's coverage of the UK is particularly outstanding -- you can even have it superimpose a map image over an aerial photograph of the same area at the same scale as the map.

For the United States, I LOVE Terraserver. It has maps and aerial photographs from the United States Geological Survey. For example, here is an aerial photograph of a portion of the terminal building at SFO:

This site tiles the photographs together at whatever resolution you want in order to show you almost any area of the country you want. Like I said, they also have USGS topographic maps for the entire country, again at your choice of resolution. By clicking on Advanced Find, you can enter a street address. This allows you to bring up an aerial photograph of where you live or work, or almost any other place of interest in the United States.

For street-level finding maps in a city or for driving directions, Mapquest or some other site that generates maps on the fly from a database is better, but otherwise Terraserver and sites like it that use scanned images of paper maps provides superior results, IMHO. Here is an example of a randomly pick Maui, Hawaii, map. You can zoom in or out and pan to whatever portion of the map you want.
