Gate Check Elimination

"In cooperation with the Transportation Security Administration, gate screening of passengers is being eliminated. Passenger identification checks and screening that was formerly done at the gates will now be done at the security checkpoint. As a result, a boarding pass is now required to get through security checkpoints. An E-Ticket receipt or itinerary is no longer adequate. This change has already been implemented in Detroit and is being rolled out to all airports over the next few months. To eliminate uncertainty during this transition period, Northwest recommends that all passengers obtain a boarding pass prior to the security checkpoint. "

Just got this in the mail! This is the smartest thing the FAA has done all year... Now they just need to make it nationwide!

I got an email from CO tonight. Apparently it is happening at EWR as well.

ok .. this is a good idea. But why the boarding pass requirement?

Yeah, that's pretty lame too... It's not like TSA every looked at them before with gate checks... and the person at the security checkpoint was always an airline employee checking them before. It makes ZERO sense.

They need to just get the regular security points in check and let everybody through like before...

Because EasyCheckin can't determine if you just flashed it a real ID or your Sam's Club card http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Because how else will CAPPS work if you don't check in first? Random gate screening isn't going away, it's just moving to the checkpoint. Gotta have a boarding pass to tell if you have been computer selected for Random Checkpoint Groping. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

i generally like this idea, but i'm not a bag-checker.

as a result, if the stupid machines won't work right, as they are wont to do, i gotta go wait in the cattle line.

or praise whatever i have AA status and only fly them. ooh problem solved. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

WHAT!!??!!!
This is one of the DUMBEST things yet!!!
This is going to make regular check-in lines MUCH longer, and just in time for the busy holiday season. All the people who usually check-in at the gate, or at an airport lounge will now be added to the already chaotic check-in lines.
At least with gate screening only a few people per flight were inconvenienced, now EVERYONE will be. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/mad.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/mad.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/mad.gif
Exactly how is this smart??

Actually..for me as a german this is comment practise!!!!

The only real dumb thing does the Frankfurt Airport..it does the security check in a special area together for the flights to the US AND the middle east. Thus doubling the neccesary connection time there.

I really like that, having flown a lot the last weeks. I never gotten pulled out for an additional screeing in 12 or so segments, but it was always aquard waiting in front of the gate "do they get me or not".
BUT, it always takes me a few minutes to get through the normal security screening anyway cause: guys, get ready for a good laugh - my bra sets the alarm in most airports off!!! It has those metal underwires, thus getting me a nice body search 90% of the time. So, I dont mind if it takes there even longer. And, when I connect I only have to do it once instead of 2-3 times.

There's going to be a mess at US airports,if they are searching any significant number of travelers. It's one more thing that creates hassle. And hassle creates less flyers.

You're right, it's going to add to the chaos and is a total waste of time, "security"-wise.

1)Let anyone have access to the gates and clubs who passes the metal detector and x-ray muster.

2)No more random screenings of any kind.

3)Any surplus TSA agents not needed to screen the gate visitors at the metal detectors/x-ray machines (no random searches!) can be reassigned to latrine duty or dismissed, thus saving valuable funds.

Thank god for NWA.com and Delta.com web checkin and Elite priority lines.

Oh how I am looking forward to my travel home for Thanksgiving on Wendesday afternoon before Turkey day. I think I am going to film it just to watch the terminal rage that will brew when Mr. Once a year flyer and his family of 8 screaming babies are stuck in a check-in line for 2 hours as TSA inspects grandma's shoes for traces of dog poo.

We must not overlook the fact, that these procedures are determined by experts in their field. WHo are we to judge their knowledge and expertise?
