New Orleans
 

I will be in New Orleans next week and will have my days free while my husband takes care of business. Any suggestions for me, such as ... great antique shopping (where?) -- any interesting shopping areas (other than the typical stores), etc to fill my days?

Take a walk down Royal Street in the Quarter, from Canal to St Peters. Lots of art and antique stores. At St Peters, take a right and walk one block to Jackson Square. You're likely to find street performers, musicians and artists plying their trade there. Pop into the St Louis Cathedral there for a moment of quiet, then head to the opposite corner of the Square and the cafe du monde, for a cafe au lait and some beignets to recharge your batteries.

Once you have your second wind, walk down North Peters St to the French Market.

Some suggestions:

1. You must visit cafe du monde (on Decatur St.) for some beignets and coffee at least once during your visit.

2. My last visit I took the Historic New Orleans Walking Tour company's Cemetary Tour and enjoyed it greatly. All of their tours are sure to be quite good.

3. Ride the St. Charles Avenue streetcar to the end of the line and back. It takes a litte over an hour and provides for some nice sightseeing of the Garden District.

4. For some fine dining go to Commander's Place for dinner. Commander's Palace is my favorite resturant in the country. Breakfast at Brennan's is also superb.

Yes, the Garden District is really nice. Take the streetcar as mentioned. They also have walking tours that get into the detail of the architecture.

Skip Bourbon St. and touristy "Ghost tours".

For off the beaten path dining take a cab to Cafe Degas...near the fairgrounds. Talk about your ambience! Not as touristy.
