Safety in Savannah?
 

I just read a disturbing post on the Frommer message board that armed robbery on the downtown streets is not uncommon.

Is there truth to this? Are precautions taken in any other city the same for SAV? I would appreciate your comments. My sister and I (female) are traveling solo there soon.

We were there over New Years... and found the city to be safe and friendly.

Of course, we did not venture down dark alleys nor unlighted areas of the city.

Just be careful... and you should be fine.

Enjoy that city... it is beautiful.

I too have been there a few months ago and agree with William! Yet admittedly the street traffic is sometimes minimal in the evening and there are often a few "suspicious looking" characters wandering/hanging around that may possibly invoke fear(s) in the more provincial types among us! Thanks William and Doc! I spoke with the front desk manager at our B&B. She said that over the weekend the police caught a man and woman team that had been responsible for many robberies.

We will take normal precautions and enjoy our visit to this city that so many rave about.

I will be there Friday arriving noon on my way to Hilton Head for the weekend.

Any suggestions on the highlights to see there for a few hours?

I wandered around by myself one very rainy May afternoon. It was interesting to see vast range of building stock and commercial ventrues in the central building district, but I never felt unsafe. I guess all the muggers were hiding for cover.

I didn't find the public market area to be very nice though.
