Does anyone remember pre-1992 nonrefundable rules?
With all of the unhappiness and anguish about the changes in the rules regarding nonrefundable tickets, I wondered if people remember how much worse it was pre-1992?
In those days NR meant non-refundable and non-exchangeable. Your only choice, if you couldn't go, was to get that dreaded "doctor's note" and send it in to the refund department. Now, at least, you can still exchange the unused ticket for a new ticket and pay the $100 and you can still change the return anytime before you travel for $100. I know it's a lot more stringent than what we've been used to, and a lot worse than Southwest's policy, but it's better than pre-1992. |

I remeber the days when all tickets were refundable.

...and you could make reservations six months or so out and ticket when you felt like it - and pay at that time.

If you were a frequent flyer in 1992, you would remember that your travel agent could get all kinds of restrictions waived, and non-refundable tickets cancelled from their reports all the time. Now, travel agents are almost history, and we are at the mercy of a thinly disguised monopoly.

Things are also far simpler and more flexible in places like SE Asia, where they might only have 3 or 4 fare levels and economy means Y. Refunds might be charged at 25% at the lowest tier, but it doesn't cost anything to change a ticket.

If you think you've got a monopoly down there, try being in Canada http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...um/biggrin.gif
