Baggage interlining query
 

Someone I know had a BD-issued ticket for EMA-CDG on BD, and a separate AF-issued ticket for CDG-BCN on AF, but on a legal connect.

The BD check-in agent at EMA refuse to through-tag his bag to BCN, on the grounds that the second sector was not on the same ticket. The result was that the client waited 9 hours for a bmibaby flight direct to BCN, and had to pay an excess baggage charge, about both of which he is very unhappy. (Don't ask me why he decided to wait for a WW. It sounds crazy to me. I'd have just lugged my bag at CDG.)

Anyway, his TA's airline liaison office has replied that the agent was correct, it is an IATA ruling, luggage can only be tagged as far as the single ticket indicates, no down or off lining permitted.

Query - is this right?

I know I've had interline transfer bags through-tagged when the sectors have been on different carriers, each of which issued its own ticket. Is that done by carriers as a concession, and is the IATA rule as stated above?

aa-ba,aa-qf,sas-aa,aa-singapore, & others.

I too have had my luggage tagged to my final destination on split tickets three separate times recently.

YOW-SEA on AC then SEA-ANC on AS

YOW-LHR on AC then LHR-HEL on AY

YUL-LHR on AC then LHR-ARN on SK

Only AC and SK are alliance parterns in the above routes.

I've interlined on separate tickets many times. In fact, I've even had airlines print BOARDING PASSES for subsequent flights on separate tickets.

The only time it should be a problem is if the airlines lack interline agreements, but that's unlikely between British Midland and Air France.

I hate it when airline employees make up their own rules and laws.

I have never been denied to check my luggage through with two (or even three) seperate tickets) as long as there is no stopover in between.

(3 seperate tickets was in 2000: Zürich-Brussels on Swissair, Brussels-Washington D.C. on UA with a transatlantic ticket, Washington D.C. - Denver with a coupon out of my Sky Pass on UA).

I've a 1 days stop over in SIN. SQ is kind enough to check through my bags to Bangkok. My hand carry is appropriate for the 1 day stop over.

Thanks, everyone. I'm glad it's all consistent with my own experience. I think this person should just keep bashing away at the airline to get some apology.

Did he actually have the second ticket in hand when trying to do it?? The only time I have ever had a problem like this is when although I have an itinerary or even an e-ticket the first airline won't check the interline bage unless they see a paper ticket.
