Website hosting

I'd like to put up a website for family and friends to view pictures from my travels and other events.

I have no idea who provides such services, let alone who is the most reliable, cost effective or even how to build a webpage. Any experience out there that you can share?

There are dozens of good hosting sites out there and I think the choice will largely come down to price; how much space do you need and how much traffic do you realistically expect to receive.

That being said, I have been using www.prohosting.com for about the past two years and am completey satisfied. I've also been told that www.intellihost.net has some good prices being that they are new. I have no association with either. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

If all you want to do is to post pictures, then consider someplace like yahoogroups or communities.msn.com. Each gives you a decent amount of storage space, lets you set up a photo album for free, and manages the images for you. If you want more then that then you will need a host, but if it's just pictures......

My older son and his wife posted the grandkids' photos on clubphoto.com. Posting and viewing are free. The site makes money by selling prints and other stuff - frames, mugs with a photo on them, t-shirts, you name it. You don't have to know a thing about building a Web page. They tell you all you need.

You can also post pictures for free and create albums at www.ofoto.com

Also, some ISP give you space so you can post your website. Who do you use?

This is a plug for a friend of mine who runs an ISP, so please take it accordingly. I also use his service myself, as does my brother-in-law, and we are all pleased. www.pair.com

But as others have said, for your purpose you may be able to find a free ISP if you are so inclined.

I use MSN for dial up Internet.

I haven't used MSN for years. I currently use Earthlink. But usually you get 10-20MB of storage for you.

I believe that you can use FrontPage or FrontPage Express to post your website.

I would contact their customer support, and ask them on how to publish to your personal space.

It would look something like somedotcom.com/yourname

or something like that.

If you had Earthlink I could tell you for sure, but you shouldn't have to pay any extra to publish some photos.

Hope this helps http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...um/biggrin.gif

If you have a space that gives you storage for free (like AT&T that gives you 60 megs or so), you can go to a place like namecheap.com and get a domain name for under $9 per year ($8.88) and that includes free forwarding and free e-mail forwarding. That price includes the .info and .us extensions that others are charging up to $25 a year for without any forwarding.

Forwarding will let you choose a name like dingo.us (though it's not available, so try again) and tell it to send anybody who goes to dingo.us and forward it to some impossible name to remember like

If you get free storage space, it's by far the easiest way to get online with an easy to remember solution.

I started using name cheap about two months ago because I was paying considerably more for forwarding and have had no problems with them. There are many others out there under $10 per year for the name and forwarding.
